Why can't you do that now? After all, your daughter could marry and take the name of her lover. Or maybe you'll have a son that marries a bisexual and engages in 3-ways with lesbians. Or maybe your son will be a serial murderer, specializing in lesbians. You never know.

What I mean is that you might have had a case for this being ridiculous if it were just a 39 year old woman and a 15 year old boy. But she was his teacher. She had a position of authority over him. That changes things.

That is a valid point, and she should certainly never teach again.

However, maybe a few months in jail may have been a more resonable sentence.

Is the woman's sentence consistent with the kind of sentence a male teacher would have got in similar circumstances against the student ... or against a female student of that age?

When sentencing in the UK, how much emphasis is put on the deterrence factor of the sentence?

Was the boy a student in her class? Or just a student at the school she teaches at?

The article doesn't make this clear (I think there is only a minor small difference but regardless, she is in a position of authority)

I'd like to know the reasons for the 32 month sentence - seems harsh - though as implied by the article above it does seem that she prayed preyed on him?

But did the boy know it was a teacher at his school when the contact was initiated, if she set up a 'fake' account? Not that it makes much difference because he would've known as soon as they met - so if she was his teacher or even just a teacher at his school ... she had some sort of 'authoritative' position over him that may have affected his thought processes - and lets not forget that the teenage mind is very plastic and very susceptible to influence.

15yr olds may think they are in total control but they literally don't have the experience, maturity or ability to 'just say no' sometimes. (more at http://www.newscientist.com/topic/teenagers)

As always, there is a dearth of evidence supplied and there are still way too many unanswered questions to form an informed opinion.

Whether it is consistent or not in current sentencing practice, is there any room for an argument that male offenders should be dealt with somewhat more harshly in an otherwise similar situation?

I can see arguments for and against...

I think if you substitute her facts for a MALE teacher/Nurse/Doctor and he would have received a much longer sentence. i am ambivalent to her circumstances- we ALL know the rules- break them at your peril! Oh and yes sentencing guidlines for different crimes are bollocks!
