There are certainly those as background factors, along with historical legacies to do with girl's education. There have been some changes, at least in Oz. A definite increase of women doing engineering, driving trucks and being car mechanics, for example...

There are loads of jobs men can do better than women. Look at bush pilots. They have to (among other duties) move fuel drums around, often on tundra or gravel.

I couldn't move fuel drums around and I am a proper man, but I know proper women who could. I guess it is rather a matter of the individual than the reproductive organs who can be a bush pilot.

There were a few female labourers working and they would easily move an oil drum but these days the labour laws are strict about weight. Max weight that can be manhandled is 25 kgs. The days of macho labourers are over. There are plenty of small machines for moving heavier objects around. Strength these days is less of a requirement.

What amazed me was the lack of people actually working. Plenty of machines flying around.

Some jobs like warehouse store person or vehicle assembly workers, for example, would have largely been impossible for most women to do in the past. But now with mechanical/robotic assistance there's little reason why women can't do those jobs.

I'm prepared to be shot down for this but as a long term manager of teams of people, at least half of who were usually women, I always found women, as a rule, more efficient, organised and effective at their jobs - also more hard working. I don't know what the deal is with men - or perhaps 'was' and it is changing - but they always seemed to have less of those qualities. Personal observation based on my personal experience - and of course there were always exceptions.

And mine. Although being a programmer I seldom worked with any one else I still preferred women's company. Much easier going. I shared a room in office with a female colleague for three years. She was a highly intelligent doctor of mathematics. It was a very good and productive time.

School "dinner ladies are not bin men". Of course. One lot is just women doing women's work, and the others are men doing a man's work - and women's work is just less important and less arduous, less challenging, less skilled, and less responsible than men's, eh?

Why should it matter? If you can't get enough dinner ladies to do the job, you should be free to pay more. If there is a queue for the job, you should pay less.
Same with bin men.
Like my OP says, you could grade the Arsenal men and ladies teams as similar work. Doesn't mean they deserve the same money. That's the reality of the market.
Trouble is, when you abandon the market, it ends up fucked up. And there's no moral reason why you should abandon the market.
It's the Labour Party, and the unions, who are responsible for the current bollocks.

The thing here you are trying equate work which is not the same due to physical requirements at this moment in time. You are also describing an unregulated society. Forget top sport. Football teams at club level these days are populated by girls and boys in the same team. There has been a massive transformation over the last 10 years. The numbers of girls entering the sport is unbelievable. The same is true of hockey and rugby. We dont know where things will be in 10 or 20 years. Ever watched female rugby? Some powerful women there.
