There are more bikes than cars in Amsterdam (which I visited last month). The city is designed for them, with cycle paths everywhere, bike traffic control lanes and lights and places to park. There are 40,000 cycle park spaces at their 'Central Station' railway station.

The buggers still cycle the wrong way up cycle paths and ignore lights! Almost got hit several times! Bastards!

Great city though..

Fella needs a "Mad Max" bicycle in Amsterdam...razors on the wheels, lots of pointy things sticking out everywhere. Combine that with a maniacal grin and laugh as you merrily weave and stalk other riders will keep them out of your way.

The bike taxis in downtown Denver are arrogant assholes who ride the wrong way on one way streets, cut in and out of traffic at will, block traffic when they congregate, use the sidewalks whenever they want...and charge two bucks a block. And there are idiots who pay them that much.

Talking about getting your bum from A to B, the saddle is the biggest deterrent to riding a bike for me.
My bike has got full suspension, and even then, an ordinary saddle gives me a pain in the arse.

I have swapped my bike saddle for a moped seat. What a difference !
I'm happy to pay a little in ergonomics for a massive increase in comfort.

Having said that, I did see some pretty huge proper bike seats, in Wilco yesterday. It's the first time I've seen anything sensible on sale.
They were twenty quid though, and my moped seat is bigger and softer still, so I didn't buy one.

I tried to find one for my Montague Paratrooper folding bike (which I've ridden with the best of fitness intentions about three times total), but the best they could do was a gel seat about the same as every other seat. The theory, they say, is that when you sit, you're supposed to sit on your ischial tuberosities, not on your glutes and if the seat is bigger then it rubs on your inner thighs and doesn't allow you to pedal efficiently. Of course this is really meant for racing. When I was a kid we had comfortable seats that allowed you to sit pretty much erect, rather than that spine-busting bent-over racing position, and pedal at a leisurely pace just fine. Now it's all about the need for speed and finding a reasonable seat is just about impossible. I did manage to get extensions for the handlebars that now allow me to sit reasonably straight up and down, taking the strain off my back, shoulders, elbows and hands. I've developed a cyst on a tendon in my left palm that really fucking hurts if I hit it (which is weird because it's not my wanking hand...). It's so bad that I cannot effectively clutch the BMW either, I have to turn my hand in a weird direction to get the ball of my thumb on the grip before I can squeeze the clutch lever. Same thing with the bike handlebar and the brake handle. Having all my upper body weight on the handlebars was intolerable.

When going from A to B, I usually wear normal clothing (except for the helmet*). I only don special clothing when going for longer trips.

(*) Fierce discussion on whether wearing helmets is a good thing will ensue.

No argument on that from me. I've had my life saved by helmets on several occasions, from motorcycles to aircraft. I will neither ride nor fly without one...or seatbelts.

But, I'd never presume to order someone else to wear one. Stupid is as stupid does.
