All wrong. The present tense is ''play it as it lies'' and the past tense is ''played it as it lay''.
In this case, ''did he have to play it as it lay?''
Simples.

I'll add that since bears, alligators, bees, and rattlesnakes are considered dangerous under the Rules, the player is entitled to a free drop, and does not have to retrieve his ball in this instance.

At least he didn't shoot it. Some club in South East Asia - back in the colonial days - had crocodiles on the course. They had some interesting local rules covering what should be done if there was a croc between you and your ball. Something along the lines of "shoot first, then take a free drop".
