But the NHS should give free fertillity treatments ? reconsruct ligaments for sports players ? treat obese people ?
Just where do you draw the line TA ........ Fine no free treatment for smokers ....I'll have a TAX refund then oh and don't bother to treat me
when my liver packs in .....cool the tax refund on my boose will be handy too .
I know... That's why I'd never seriously suggest it. There's nowhere to draw a line, unless you abolish state health care completely.
The slippery slope argument is great for deferring/rejecting action on something or other. I had this very same discussion with friends about a month ago. You can extrapolate any proposed action to it's logical conclusions and reject it on those grounds. Paralysis generally results. My take is that you work out where to draw a line that has more than a whiff of consistency about it across different situations, even if where it's drawn is going to always be somewhat arbitrary. We set thresholds on the age for voting, driving, drinking, sex, etc., and they are all to some degree arbitrary and artificial. It doesn't stop us from setting them.

Edit : cost to treat smokers 1.7 Billion . tobacco Tax income 12 billion + income tax +coporate taxs etc

That's a pretty sweet deal And You get to be smug and self-righteous into the bargain
You also get a lot of smokers dying young, thus saving on pensions and OAP-related health care and such like. The old Yes, Minister argument ... :eddy:

:whisper: But Feck already hates me.

Edit: I guess I'm a little biased, mostly because I have a rather unpleasant allergic reaction to cigarette smoke, that I have to consciously suppress whenever I'm in company.

No-one smokes in my company. No-one. Not even where the law might allow it (which isn't a lot of places here in Ireland). My days of passive smoking are over. :ddpan:
