The gasoline/petrol price thread.
Re: The gasoline/petrol price thread.
Actually quite surprised petrol (gas is what you breathe) is only twice that of the US in the UK. It used to be 3.5 to 4 times that amount.
I guess when petrol is 90% tax the price of barrel of oil only has a very limited effect at the petrol pumps.
Anyway too many cars on the road therefore petrol is still too cheap

Re: The gasoline/petrol price thread.
I drive a Skoda Octavia Estate (4x4)*, I used to do 90 miles commute a day & got 44 mpg (diesel). Cost about £10-15/day in fuel. Now I don't have any commute & I suckle at the teat of the oil industry, screw the environment burn that oil!!

If you want to tax cars off the road, then why not tax the cars themselves such that people couldn't afford them?MrJonno wrote:Actually quite surprised petrol (gas is what you breathe) is only twice that of the US in the UK. It used to be 3.5 to 4 times that amount.

I have feet, you lazy cunts.
In all seriousness though I remember seeing it worked out that a car was an unnecessary expense for most people who live in a city or its suburbs and that the amount of money squandered in the U.K. by people who needlessly had cars, would have more than paid for world class public transport through trains and buses.
I seem to recall that it only worked out cost efficient if you lived 20 miles or more outside a city and had 3 kids.
Still give a chimp a shiny and the rest will be claiming it is a chimp right that they have a shiny too.

I can take a bus to work if I want to drive to the bus stop and then allow myself an hour and a half each way to get to work, and then not have a car to get anywhere I need to go during the day.Audley Strange wrote:I have feet, you lazy cunts.

http://tampa.cbslocal.com/2012/02/22/fl ... -stations/TAMPA (CBS Tampa) — Talk about pain at the pump! Some Florida drivers are spending nearly $6 a gallon to fill up their gas tanks.
According to GasBuddy.com, motorists are shelling out $5.89 for a gallon of regular gas at a Shell station in Lake Buena Vista, topping out at $5.99 a gallon for premium. It doesn’t get better at a Suncoast Energy station in Orlando, where drivers are paying $5.79 for a gallon of regular.
Well, I guess Obama may get his wish that Americans would pay closer to European gasoline prices....

Yep, this. Unfortunately most Americans don't have benefit of the relative smallness of scale that the UK has.Coito ergo sum wrote:I can take a bus to work if I want to drive to the bus stop and then allow myself an hour and a half each way to get to work, and then not have a car to get anywhere I need to go during the day.Audley Strange wrote:I have feet, you lazy cunts.

It would take me probably three times as long and be nearly as costly and exponentially more inconveniencing to try to get public transport. Not to mention the cold or extreme heat, and having to wear office attire for trekking to and from it. That's why I try to maximise trips out for shopping and errands during the week, and when I'm by myself I'll often try to not drive anywhere at all.

Have you properly outfitted it with a sufficient number of bumper stickers and symbols?Ian wrote:What the heck is that thing? A jelly bean-shaped minivan?Coito ergo sum wrote:Ian wrote:I drive a Prius. It gets 46 mpg. So har dee har har. Suckers.

Re: The gasoline/petrol price thread.
Some countries do put very high sales taxes on cars but its a relatively easy tax to dodge. Cars have an use in an emergency anyway the idea of high petrol charges is that it reduces their use through obviously not enoughCoito ergo sum wrote:If you want to tax cars off the road, then why not tax the cars themselves such that people couldn't afford them?MrJonno wrote:Actually quite surprised petrol (gas is what you breathe) is only twice that of the US in the UK. Coito - Look up what James Woolsey says about the Prius (and why he owns one), then get back to me.
