How will this put the financially challenged students off applying? Over the last 20 years, more and more people have gone to do degrees. When I did mine (just dropping that in, obviously) far fewer students studied to degree level. It is impossible to pay tuition fees for so many students now. What's wrong with paying for higher education, getting a better job and paying it back? If I have missed a point, please feel free to offer a contrasting opinion.
Now you can all hit me.
But 21 grand is reasonable, you can pay that in as little as two, three years depending on how you budget.
You treble that, 21 grand becomes 63.

Our struggle is not against actual corrupt individuals, but against those in power in general, against their authority, against the global order and the ideological mystification which sustains it.

lolno.

chucking a heavy fire extinguisher into crowds. Only luck stopped someone having their skull smashed open. Over tuition fees? Little shits if ever I saw them. Peaceful protests achieve nothing so kill someone over not being able to do your 'design technology' degree? hmmmThe Mad Hatter wrote:lolno.

The most preferable action would have been to blockade the place, or paint the building with naughty pictures or something.

so someone was killed now? You will notice that in the history of protests it is the state/pigs who do the killing and hurting, NOT the protesters. Again, the pigs are the little shits. Re: Smash the State! - Tory HQ stormed!
I think the protests are beginning to be about more than this. People feel helpless in the face of the current political/social/economic system. The student fees issue is as harsh as it is because it is part of the response to us ordinary people bailing out the banks and the commercial sector which created a near meltdown because of its greed.
I have a great deal of sympathy, given that in my line of work, budgets over the next couple of years are going to be reduced by close to 30%. I work in public services and many of us will lose our jobs. The public will have far fewer of them (services) because the money that used to be spent on them is going to pay back a debt the country owes through no fault of its ordinary people.

Good post Rum, couldn't agree more. Leave it to the media to try to convince people it is the peoples fault and for people to believe it. This is the fault of the system, neo-liberal policies.Rum wrote:I think the protests are beginning to be about more than this. Same here. I work in a school and have been told to expect redundancy and to start checking out the jobs pages. I think I'll go and set fire to something or kill someone because life's not fair and I am so immature I just can't cope with that concept. Here I come. I have a bomb.Rum wrote:I think the protests are beginning to be about more than this. People feel helpless in the face of the current political/social/economic system. Rather, accept that we have a democratic process - a load of people voted them in (actually I wasnt one of them), and we need to think of something better next time, without smashing stuff up like little shitssandinista wrote:"just grow up"...meaning: sit around, do nothing and accept getting fucked in the ass by government/corporate policies. good work.stripes4 wrote:Same here. It is OK for the likes of you and I, who would never consider violent action, but the reality is that the government will only really respond in terms of relaxing its austerity measures to disruption on a major scale. You can bet your socks that they have discussed the potential of social disorder as a result of the economic measures they have taken right at cabinet level. They will know exactly how much of it they can absorb before they have to give a little in terms of leeway/compromise.stripes4 wrote:Same here. yes, I do believe that not a lot happens without it having been anticipated and to some extent, pre-socially engineered. As a reactionary youth, this thought used to bother me - self determinism and free will is something we all like to imagine we have, but now am less idealistic. It's not to be mistaken for apathy - just reality!Rum wrote:It is OK for the likes of you and I, who would never consider violent action, but the reality is that the government will only really respond in terms of relaxing its austerity measures to disruption on a major scale.
