Re: The Thread of Democrats
I don't understand why they haven't passed a law legalizing abortion on a Federal level. It doesn't take an Amendment. More difficult to overturn a well-crafted law than a poorly crafted decision like RvW. Why didn't they do this when Obama had both the House and Senate? They got Obamacare through, they could have done it at the same time. They squander every single opportunity they get on ridiculously stupid bullshit instead of doing something the vast majority of the people want?
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Re: The Thread of Democrats
Because politicians did not want to vote on such an issue. It would be an attack on each Democrat at election. This way it passed, indirectly. We were barely able to speak in public that there are gay people in the world back then.
Cawthorn at cocaine parties would have been well hidden back then.

Re: The Thread of Democrats
I think we're going to see a lot of opinions out of this court that distress liberals, and mainstream Americans in general. I think eventually all the wrongs will be righted, but I think we're looking at a much longer timeline than the next election. It may take a generation or more, and we may not see it in our lifetimes. Is that simply empty hope? I don't think so. Democracy by its nature moves slowly, and such reversals are to be expected. But I think it will eventually get it right. I think at some point people will look back on this time and regard the current court with disrepute, that it ushered in a dark period in our history.

Re: The Thread of Democrats
The constitution assumed reasonable people would in states. This all unlisted powers were dumped on states. Thus all the regulatory work could be defined as overreach. The US will turn into a EU type, but no rights guaranteed for citizens. Well, they can move within US. That's all.

Re: The Thread of Democrats
We may look back and wonder how we ever had legal abortions. That's obviously at odds with momentum. But I have noticed a lot of uncertainty about the morality of abortion. I wonder if having to decide today to support making abortion legal, rather than just continuing to support an existing law, will mean we see a drop in support.

Re: The Thread of Democrats
It's as if they've been caught completely by surprise - having seemingly not noticed the other lot have been trying to undermine Roe vs Wade for the last 49 years.Sean Hayden wrote: ↑Thu May 05, 2022 11:38 amThe Democrats will bring back abortion?
I don't think so.
They all knew this was coming. They--the Democrats--just can't stop the GOP. I don't know why, we've seen every excuse.
I heard on the radio that only 18% of Americas are for a total ban on abortion - and yet the draft ruling talks about it being 'damaging' and 'divisive' etc. Well, I guess the ruling is going to heal the nation and unite everyone, eh?

It's far less mysterious if you assume they're pro-life.

Re: The Thread of Democrats
It was not exactly 76 where the Republican party started to go "Reagan." It was more like mid 60s. They wanted to undo all the social changes following the depression, any benefits like social security and medicare. The civil rights thing just annoyed them even more.
The evangelicals were then captured in the late 70s to get the full Reagan Teaparty small govt thing.

Re: The Thread of Democrats
It wasn't really a call to Republicans that Nancy made. It was a call to all her followers. They are then to do whatever it takes to convince any republicans they know to get with the times. A grass roots level thing. Also, you can affect independents with your arguments. The last thing you want to do is address conspiracy theorists directly. She may even be addressing religious democrats to talk to their own kind. Catholics et al.

Yeah, yeah, it's always our fault. I mean, we built the overwhelming support for a woman's right to choose. The ball is in her court.
WTF is she going to do?
