Re: The gender gap
I'm fully in favour of positive discrimination, to force more women into the top jobs. Nothing but good can come of it.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

When watching that video, what are members' conclusions as to the point being made:PsychoSerenity wrote:I havn't read the rest of the thread but just replying to this video because Pie is always a laugh. Although they raise important points in the video it's not entirely correct because, while yes it is illegal to pay people of different genders different amounts for the same work, that doesn't mean it doesn't happen.Brian Peacock wrote:Rum wrote:![]()
It's often entirely up to the employer/manager to decide what work people should do and assess whether work done is equal, and there's no clear way of measuring let alone enforcing that. In larger organisations this can often be better structured with clearly defined job rolls and performance targets, but in many companies decisions of hiring, salary negotiations, performance assessments, and offers for career progression are entirely decided by management on an individual employee basis, and there's no easy way for an employee to even know if they're being discriminated against let alone do anything about it. There's still a huge amount of room for gender based pay inequality and discrimination to take place, and you can be pretty sure in some circumstances it does.
On the pay gap generally, yes it's very difficult from aggregated averaged data to draw any clear conclusions about specific companies with high pay gaps. But the fact that the vast majority of companies have pay gaps that favour men does show that in the world of work as a whole there is still something very unequal that needs to be addressed.
a. You think the point being made is that there is a discriminatory gender pay gap;
b. You think the point being made is that there is not a discriminatory gender pay gap;
c. Other.

d. All of the above
The point being made is that the discriminatory pay gap (gender and other) are not due to sex discrimination. There are a lot of factors at play, but when mentioning the young women out-earning the young men, it will make an interesting study - will feminist adherents, who support removing the 'gender pay gap' be willing to lobby for lower wages for young women? Or will they lobby for larger wages for young men?

In order for things to be equal (i.e. to offset inherent male privilege) women need to make more than men for the same job. https://www.ozy.com/immodest-proposal/s ... -men/81302 QED.Cunt wrote:d. All of the above

Indeed, it's men's fault that women spend more on their hair, make-up, clothes, and 100 pairs of shoes than men do... so, to compensate women for choosing to spend more money on those things, employers should be compelled to pay women more than men.If you add up the costs for what it takes to be professionally presentable in most competitive work environments, that dollar number is much higher for women. As most women know all too well, in the business world women are expected to look better than men, from the tops of their perfectly coiffed heads to the soles of their pristine pumps.
Any areas of life where men are "forced" to pay out more dollars than women are, of course, irrelevant.

This isn't because of the gender pay gap though.

Re: The gender gap
I have been given many reasons for perfume and make-up. Among the reasons given are to smell better and to look better than they would without perfume and make-up.

Re: The gender gap
Alizé Cornet showed the most dangerous thing in sport is a woman's body
...
on a sweltering Tuesday at the US Open, when the French player Alizé Cornet was hit with a code violation by the chair umpire. She had realized her shirt was on backwards after a changeover, quickly took it off and switched it around. None of the men at the tournament were administered fines or penalties while sitting shirtless between games in the heatwave to cool off. While the code violation was later reversed and Cornet avoided a penalty after US Open organizers clarified the rules, it highlighted the double standard female athletes often face.
Indeed, it was not the first time a female tennis player’s choice of clothes had come to the attention of the authorities. It wasn’t even the first time this month. Last week, the French Tennis Federation president, Bernard Giudicelli, said Serena Williams’ catsuit would no longer be permissible at the French Open. “I think we sometimes went too far. The combination of Serena this year, for example, it will no longer be accepted. You have to respect the game and the place,” Giudicelli said.
“Respect the game.” That particular statement stands out because Williams was fully covered while looking like a bonafide superhero, and wore the specially designed catsuit to help prevent blood clots, a condition that has nearly killed her in the past...
...
... sports serve as yet another microcosm of society. The mixed signals that women face over what they should, or should not, wear in athletic competition are no different than from demands they face in the workplace. Make yourself visually appealing to your male clients, but please don’t come off as too sexy or provocative. On the other hand, even the most powerful and accomplished women are criticized for choosing comfort over allure to the male gaze: case in point: Hillary Clinton wearing kitten heels, rather than stilettos.
The recent events in tennis, in which women have been the targets of a system that either objectifies or aims to control how they present their bodies, highlights that we aren’t truly free. It doesn’t matter if you’re the best tennis player in the world wearing a catsuit to prevent blood clots, or if you’re just making sure your shirt is put on correctly.
In sport, it seems sometimes that women just can’t win.
