Okay Sherlock, so tell us what's so plainly obvious to you.

Don't keep us in the dark - you apparently have some clear idea of what the truth really is since you seem to have no doubts that the world is being deceived. So, what's your brilliant theory?


This being the age of Facebook and instant websites, I've already heard a few from the peanut gallery. That he's actually been dead for nine years. That he wasn't really there. That the SEALs managed to capture him alive (I do find this one slightly plausible, btw). There's probably even crazier stuff out there. To which do you ascribe?

(I should probably be saying thank you, btw. You seem to give the US government and military/intelligence communities a lot more credit than I do in terms of their operational capabilities and their abilities to keep a massive conspiracy a permanent secret. I'm a lot more skeptical of US capabilities in these respects.)

And by the way: the administration has said that it's got photos of him dead and video of his burial; they're weighing the choice between releasing graphic images and pissing off a lot of muslims or placating the conspiracy theory whackos (including many in the muslim world) that have naturally cropped up. No doubt the nut jobs over here will not be too impressed - they'll just claim that the pics and video were doctored. But are you so convinced of the fallacy of all this that you're willing to state so even before such information comes out? How about if another Al Qaeda senior leader says something to confirm it?

Whatever your theory, the logic people like you have goes somehing like this:
1) Most of the information on this story comes from American sources
2) I believe that anything the American government or military says is based on lies and deceit,
3) therefore this is all one big hoax.

Someday someone might sit you down and teach you how to reason properly. I have no illusions that I'm going to do that. I'd just like to hear what you think the truth is.

I can't get too excited about Osama's death, but I find this news far more hopeful: The Navy SEALs’ Booty Was Yesterday’s Biggest Victory

The most important achievement of yesterday's operation wasn't killing Osama. It was the US Navy SEALs' booty: dozens of computers, memory sticks and disks loaded with information that might just crush all of al Qaeda's network.

They wanted him dead, not dead or alive and preferably alive? This despite the unique intelligence that could be gleaned by interrogating the top pin of the 9/11 attacks? I'm trying to figure this out. I don't see why only a shoot to kill order was given when it may have been possible to do so much more with a live specimen. A trial would have shown just how much more civlized Western values are and also it would have have allowed relatives of the victims of the various atrocities to find complete closure through a court of law.

There was a firefight, and Osama would not surrender. They shot him in the head, twice. Sounds pretty normal.

I'm sure they did want him dead, rather than alive. While there may be intelligence to be gleaned, if he was sitting alive awaiting some sort of trial it would become a circus. Dead and gone now. Done. Dust off and move on.
