RNC rejects joint 'civility' statement
Various members of the DNC — including Chairman Tim Kaine, Executive Director Jen O’Malley Dillon and Communications Director Brad Woodhouse — contacted their respective RNC counterparts this week in hopes of getting RNC Chairman Michael Steele to co-sign a document with Kaine that, in part, called for “elected officials of both parties to set an example of the civility we want to see in our citizenry.”
“We also call on all Americans to respect differences of opinion, to refrain from inappropriate forms of intimidation, to reject violence and vandalism, and to scale back rhetoric that might reasonably be misinterpreted by those prone to such behavior,” read the proposed joint statement.
Mark DeMoss Disbands 'Civility Project,' Citing Conservative Attacks, Grim View On DiscourseThe Republican National Committee has rejected a proposal from its Democratic counterpart to sign a joint “civility” statement
DeMoss, an evangelical conservative with ties to some big-name Republicans, cited a general lack of interest, as well as pervading signs that the nature of political discourse appeared only to be deteriorating during Obama's first two years as president, as justifications for halting his program.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, DeMoss provided a little insight about how his project was received by some on the right.
"The worst e-mails I received about the civility project were from conservatives with just unbelievable language about communists, and some words I wouldn't use in this phone call," DeMoss told The Times. "This political divide has become so sharp that everything is black and white, and too many conservatives can see no redeeming value in any liberal or Democrat. That would probably be true about some liberals going the other direction, but I didn't hear from them."

I can live with doubt, and uncertainty, and not knowing. I think it's much more interesting to live not knowing than to have answers which might be wrong. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/12/us/12 ... .html?_r=1“He was a nihilist and loves causing chaos, and that is probably why he did the shooting, along with the fact he was sick in the head,” said Zane Gutierrez, 21,
The new details from Mr. Gutierrez about Mr. Loughner — including his philosophy of anarchy and his expertise with a handgun, suggest that the earliest signs of behavior that may have ultimately led to the attacks started several years ago.
Mr. Gutierrez said his friend had become obsessed with the meaning of dreams and their importance. He talked about reading Friedrich Nietzsche’s book “The Will To Power” and embraced ideas about the corrosive, destructive effects of nihilism — a belief in nothing. And every day, his friend said, Mr. Loughner would get up and write in his dream journal, recording the world he experienced in sleep and its possible meanings.
“Jared felt nothing existed but his subconscious,” Mr. Gutierrez said. “The dream world was what was real to Jared, not the day-to-day of our lives.”
And that dream world, his friend said, could be downright strange.
“He would ask me constantly, ‘Do you see that blue tree over there?’ He would admit to seeing the sky as orange and the grass as blue,” Mr. Gutierrez said. “Normal people don’t talk about that stuff.”
He added that Mr. Loughner “used the word hollow to describe how fake the real world was to him.”

Yes, I did. Did you? And, how does that make my "facts" misleading? The facts are the facts. Am I wrong? How?mistermack wrote:Another one of your misleading "facts" coito.Coito ergo sum wrote:One word: Switzerland. Number of private homes with firearms is estimated at about 3 million. The Swiss basically have a requirement for people under 30, due to the "militia" being, essentially, every male in the country. After the age of 30, a person is given the option to keep their gun, but if they keep it, it is reduced from full auto to semi-auto.
If you look at the conversation we were having, someone referenced a law requiring everyone to have a gun. This is just about what they have in Switzerland, so it was kind of humorous to post the Switzerland example alongside the person's comment that if we did something like that in the US, he or she would move out of the country.
My facts were not "misleading," unless you assume I was making some assertion other than what the facts were. Are you saying the numbers are wrong? On what basis? What are the real numbers? If you're not saying the numbers I posted are wrong, then I haven't mislead anyone, since I didn't say they meant anything in particular.
