FBI officials told those still at the compound, about 30 miles southeast of Burns, that they were free to leave and should do so. By midnight, few people appeared to have taken up the offer and the lights were still on.

Authorities provided no information about the roadblocks, but have scheduled a news conference for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Burns.

Only a few people had left, said Gary Hunt, who arrived Sunday from California to support the occupation. "The rest have decided they're going to hold their ground," he said.

Confusion reigned at the windswept bird sanctuary that has served as the hub of an anti-government protest that captivated the country 30 miles outside this high desert town, but late in the day an original occupier who took on the leadership role and some others were surrendering or leaving.

The moves appeared to follow a message sent by Ammon Bundy to the protesters through his attorney: "Stand down and go home."

Fair points, but they even commented early on that they didn't want to die in a gunfight. For the fear to be real they have to know that if you raise a gun to a democratic(ish) government, you run a high risk of getting dead.

I don't know. I think breivik is much more harmless sitting well-fed in a prison library than if he had been shot by police and died as a martyr for racism.

Here, though, these guys have this bucket of nonsense hocum about Magna Carta and Sheriffs somehow being the true "sovereigns" over state governments, federal governments, the people themselves and all of this means the federal government can't manage and charge grazing fees for land that it in fact owns. These aren't archaic ideas that were once true but are now outdated. This stuff was never true or even made any sense. Clearly, there's a sense of alienation and entitlement and a cultural posture driving these beliefs but I'm sorry, that's just a complete f'ing pile of nonsense that isn't based on anything. Like I said, it's sad to see someone throw their life away over bullshit. Not because Finicum matters to me but because senseless bloodshed is sad and stupid and with any life ultimately tragic.
