Re: The Coronavirus Thread
Stitches were cool. I got two in my chin and was the toast of the 2nd grade for a while.
I have memories I think are from around 4 or 5, actually quite a few. All my memories of Dover, Delaware were from prior to 6 when we moved to Thailand. I remember a lot of stuff, but it's a bit jumbled up without a clear timeline.

Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I remember 1952 clearly. I was three but I went to Acton where the flats were being built. It had been just fields. Hard to believe these days. I was born in the Royal Hospital Willesden. It was not part of London then. Now it is a dump.

My parents did not meet till 53. Dad had spent a year in studying Oklahoma, but I think left due to lack of funds. Both my parents attended 52 Olympics in Helsinki but had not met. My mom's friends posed for pictures with black American runners. I have the photos, my mom is not in them. So not likely I would have been black! One the girls dated the Mormon missionary. It had a happy end: she converted him.
My aunt had a German boyfriend during the war for a year.

I was fairly streetwise in 1954. I had two friends and we travelled all over London on the Underground and never bought a ticket. We knew the markets. It was a great time.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
I lived in Dollis Hill for many years. Kendal Road, right opposition Goldstone Park. Willesden Green is the next stop down on the Bakerloo. It was a very quiet area, trapped between three railway lines: the tube line up-and-down to Wembley, the overland train line to Cricklewood and beyond, and the North London freight line. It meant you always had to go 'the long way round' to get to it by car and it was never used as a commuter rat run.Scot Dutchy wrote: ↑Sat May 02, 2020 6:37 pmI remember 1952 clearly. Acton then was on the Green Line. It had the third rail outside the other two. The underground had the third rail in the middle. I was a small child but I always knew how to get home; street knowledge and this was the fifties.

laklak's proposition is not as outlandish as it seems. When we see that Natural Selection is a founding principle of existence, we realize that it must operate everywhere; even in dimensions and worlds that we cannot see. Thus, any random alteration of cross-dimensional relations that confers a selection advantage will likely continue & be built upon...
A flat rejection of this possibility relies on nothing more than a WYSIWYG attitude (What You See Is What You Get). Modern science & technology is largely based on being open minded to other possibilities, even when theyre not intuitive or 'in your face' obvious.

We've got to stop using this kook's name. You all realise he does a search for his name every now and then, right? Let's not feed his ego.

I am not a bit surprised as the Brits are always control freaks.
Fearful Britons remain strongly opposed to lifting lockdown
Fearful Britons remain strongly opposed to lifting lockdown
Orwell knew his country.Just one in five want schools, pubs and restaurants to be reopened, according to new poll by Opinium
Fewer than one in five of the British public believe the time is right to consider reopening schools, restaurants, pubs and stadiums. The findings, in a new poll for the Observer, suggest Boris Johnson will struggle to convince people to return their lives to normal if he tries to ease the lockdown soon.
The poll by Opinium, taken between Wednesday and Friday last week, found 17% of people think the conditions have been met to consider reopening schools, against 67% who say they have not been, and that they should stay closed.
Opposition to reopening restaurants and pubs – and allowing mass gatherings in sports and other stadiums to resume – is even higher. Just 11% of people think the time is right to consider reopening restaurants, while 78% are against. Only 9% believe it would be correct to consider reopening pubs, while 81% are against; 7% say it would be right to allow mass gatherings at sports events or concerts to resume, with 84% against.

Or it could be that they recognise rational measures to limit a pandemic (however belated) when they see them...

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
Oh come on Jim. An Englishman likes nothing better than to inform on his neighbours especially those thought to be weird. Britain does not have any rational measures in place. They are a real "pic a' mix" job lot. A worse one than our choices. The UK has almost double our death rate per million (if you believe the data) and rising.
As my wife said this morning no one in here circle of friends and family in both here and in Ireland knows any one who has died from the virus. So widespread is it. Here the hot spots are care homes and people are not in those institutions for being healthy.

The UK is again missing out but they are probably happy with the thought:

International alliance aims to accelerate development and distribution of a vaccine
European leaders have pledged to raise billions of pounds to help find a vaccine and treatments for Covid-19 as part of an “international alliance” fighting the disease.
An online pledging conference due to be held on Monday will aim to pull in raise €7.5bn (£6.6bn) in funding to support the global response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Writing in the Independent newspaper, the leaders of France, Germany, Italy and Norway and senior EU officials said the outbreak had “caused devastation and pain in all corners of the world”.
They said responding to the “global challenge” required “bringing together the world’s best – and most prepared – minds to find the vaccines, treatments and therapies we need to make our world healthy again”.
This would accompany “strengthening the health systems that will make them available for all, with a particular attention to Africa”
