The number of British citizens applying for Irish passports rose by 22% in 2018, Ireland’s foreign office said on Monday, more than doubling the total of annual applications since Britain voted to leave the European Union.

Almost 100,000 eligible Britons sought to hang onto their EU citizenship via a passport from their nearest neighbour this year, up from 81,000 last year and 46,000 in 2015, the year before the Brexit vote led to a sharp rise in applications....

Re: New Brexit Referendum

I know May is staunch about her stance that holding a second referendum would be "undemocratic," but what if they were to hold an entirely new referendum on whether a second referendum should be held in light of the fact that the ramifications of exiting the EU are much better understood by the voting public now than they were in 2016. That seems perfectly democratic to me.

The vote was 48/52 to leave - not exactly a landslide. Suppose the vote to have another was 52/48? Mahem would ensue!

Quite amazing. The Brexiteers had another wet dream presented to them:

UK 'could build new military bases around world after Brexit'
'This is our moment to be that true global player once more,' says Gavin Williamson
No mention of how this is going to be paid for. The UK has an aircraft carrier without planes and is missing 8000 recruits for the present forces never mind opening bases around the world.

The Brexiteers are flipping.

A friend indeed:

Would Theresa May’s Brexit plan destroy the prospect of a US trade deal?
Analysis: The US ambassador has said the PM’s EU withdrawal deal would make a favourable trading arrangement with Trump’s America impossible. Is he right? asks Ben Chu
A conclusion:
What’s most striking about their comments is how closely they echo the arguments of hardline Brexiteers here in the UK – the ones who are calling for the UK to crash out of the EU rather than approve May’s deal, which they say would destroy their dream of a Britain totally free of the EU.

A pretty apocalyptic picture, however, to take one example in the article, which suggests it would take 170 people 8 hours worth of for filling to get a lorry load of goods into the country - well pragmatism will win the day on that one for sure. Aint going to happen.

And now we find out that due to Tory austerity and insufficient international investment in the face of Brexit uncertainty, the UK's UNIT operations have been suspended so there's nobody to help the Doctor protect us from alien invasions. :dalek: :lay:

Except that those that want to remain are clear in what they want, simply to stay in the EU.

All the division is amongst the Brexiteers. They can't even agree on the terms of leaving the EU.

Every popular voting system can be faulted (except probably the Dutch one). Arguably a referendum whatever the context is one of the most democratic exercises one could have.
