What 500 year hurricane? Harvey wasn't even a 100 year hurricane. The only thing even slightly unusual is how it hung off to shore and moved slowly.

Stop quibbling. today’s ‘100-year floods’ may happen every three to 20 years, according to new research.

Last August, Hurricane Irene spun through the Caribbean and parts of the eastern United States, leaving widespread wreckage in its wake. The Category 3 storm whipped up water levels, generating storm surges that swept over seawalls and flooded seaside and inland communities. Many hurricane analysts suggested, based on the wide extent of flooding, that Irene was a “100-year event”: a storm that only comes around once in a century.

However, researchers from MIT and Princeton University have found that with climate change, such storms could make landfall far more frequently, causing powerful, devastating storm surges every three to 20 years. The group simulated tens of thousands of storms under different climate conditions, finding that today’s “500-year floods” could, with climate change, occur once every 25 to 240 years. The researchers published their results in the current issue of Nature Climate Change.

We all found out after the Brisbane floods in 2011 that it's the mud and soaked furniture and mattresses and chipboard that are the real kick in the guts.

Yeah a few inches of water and it's replace the fucking drywall time. And wood flooring, and baseboards, and god only knows what else. Next house (if we don't go live on a boat) is a geodesic dome built on stilts. Maybe a geodesic sphere, raised up like the Epcot globe thingy.

The first test of Lak's homemade flood prevention apparatus was successful. Built plywood panels cut to fit the doors, with lag shields imbedded in the walls and closed cell neoprene gaskets around the sides and bottom. I put it up and it holds against a garden hose and a pressure washer on low. On high it leaks, but that's because the washer is squirting the water under the gasket. No way to really test it any more thoroughly until we have a flood. It should stop any flood water getting in, but in a worst case scenario I'll just caulk the things in tight with marine sealant.

The ideological arguments over who should do what, how, and when, become insignificant before the elephant in the room. Climate change is having, and is going to have increasingly profound effects on society, social order, resource allocation and government, regardless of the political perspectives of those in power - and there's no denying that.

What a mess!

We had major floods here in Carlisle two years ago. A few thousand houses were affected, though luckily not us. A day or two after the floods arrived I went to a road near my mother's place where the floods had risen too. There were police cars, army and rescue people everywhere and an inflatable boat was paddling towards us with a couple of people wrapped in blankets riding in the back and a few possessions with them. I lifted my camera and took a picture and one of the passengers saw me. I suddenly felt a huge rush of embarrassment at what felt like voyeurism in the face of their misfortune. Of course the guy may not have given a shit about it given what else must have been on his mind, but I deleted the picture anyway.
