I get what you're saying but my point is that any atheist sign you put up will automatically be deemed as offensive. If you made what it actually said less offensive when the moralists give out about it most people will look at what the sign says and say What's wrong with that?

I don't get that. Should there have been a question mark there or...

I agree with Ani here. Two wrongs don't make a right. Making unsubstantiated, unprovable claims of an atheistic nature only adds fuel to the "atheism is just another religion" argument.

It is one thing to state that you personally don't believe in a god, quite another to claim that there is no god, because, no matter how great the circumstantial evidence, such a statement is unprovable and can only be faith based!

"Nobody has a right to not be offended." The Dawk is right there. I will not give my right of freedom of expression to avoid offending somebody else.

They are doing that too.

The FFRF has some very specific tactics and campaigns targeted for different places. That is just one of them. I think the reaction of that conservative politician who needed to be escorted away from vandalizing the sign says a lot about what's going on in Illinois, for instance. Here in California, the campaign is much milder. The campaign was "Yes Virginia, there is no Santa" or something like that, and predictably, people were outraged about that too.

I think it's important to provoke some offense in the opposite camp. Only then will they be willing to fight as strongly in return, which will put this issue of the violation of the establishment clause under the harsh scrutiny it deserves.

It is difficult for us in Europe to see why these little battles are important BUT they are !
If your State, country ,legislature is Based on the separation of church and state then EVERY time the Xians assume that they are a majority and can therefore ride roughshod over the BASIC Premise of the USA then they Must be fought .

In the long run You will be paying the (godless) Chinese for bailing you out of all the costs of your Freedumb for a generation or so,so it doesn't really matter

Still probably best not to poke the people with GOD on their side with big sticks ......Thinking and reading are still (it seems ) evidence of Un American activities in the majority of God fearing, apple pie eating I LURV ( pound chest here) MY country voters..and if that isn't enough you have a lobby system that can change "FREE Health Care for ALL " into everyone must have health insurance (OMFG you fucked that one Loyd George is spinning in his grave) . The only thing Worse is That Our Fucking PM Claimed to have "prayed " about the decision to send "our boys " to war When he stuck his tongue up the ass of an undemocratically "elected" Liar months before

( sowwy little rant there )

I got in a fight with a guy one time over a skinhead passing out pamphlets on a street corner. The guy wanted to stomp the skinhead's ass. I told him that the freak had a right to say what he wanted to say and that violence was not the proper reply, you got some pamphlets of your own and competed with the guy. He called me a Nazi at that point. I kicked him in the nuts and the conversation was over.

The reaction to the atheist position from fundamentalist christians is always angry and hatefull...

Sugar coating the message that we don't accept their delusional crap will make no difference to that...

It's not about sugar coating, it's about being factually correct. The only word in the campaign slogan I really object to is "just", because religion is a great many things more then the things mentioned in the slogan. I'm all for public debate on the subject of religion, and I certainly don't mind if a few people get offended or even actively insulted. I do want the people on my side of the argument to use valid claims and arguments though.
