Can we tone down the arguments a little guys. Just a little too heated.

Thanks.

I did the same thing, a month ago, and I don't know why either. I just can't seem to get into it. I imagine I will one day.

Of course, that's what I said about forums and Facebook when I signed up for them, and now I am the biggest whore ever.

I agree - what an amazing phenomena. So much so that Obama publically stated that Twitter should not go down for maintenance during the protests in Iran due to it being such a vital means of communication.

I also have to give huge credit to Facebook and Atheist Nexus, two social networking sites that have been instrumental in aiding me with some Atheist activism.

Well, first off, you are unable to recognize a joke when you see it. Secondly, I get the basic premise, and I disagree with having a description of your whole life on a profile page available to total strangers. As for supposed "ignorance and lack of vision", that is a barely veiled ad hom, so you should either apologise or fuck off. And it is truly imbeceilic to sneer at someone's less than entusiastic attitude towards something that seems to them to be the online equivalent of a cult, and to deride them automatically for not wanting to join in. Talk about a lack of vision.

Somehow, I think that personal e-mails and posts on other sites play a part. And from what I gather, yes, twitter has played a role. But how the fuck is that a defence of the worth of social networking sites in general?

You know what? I think that's another ad hom. Such a dismissal of someone's opinions, coupled with particularly stupid ad homs is pathetic, disgusting, idiotic, and a sure sign of the invalidity of your own opinions. Consider your post fucking reported.

Simple - use the privacy settings.

Speaking personally, they have enabled me to make friends, sell books, find old acquaintances, petition my MP, organise an anti-BNP organisation. I could go on.

Of course you think that. By doing so you get out of answering it. The simple fact is that every complaint I have ever heard about technology like this has come from the mouth of someone who does not see what it can do for humanity. I note that you didn't mention the cheap fuel account on Twitter, clearly because it is a great, innovative and pithy idea and it proves that innovative software in the hands of 'professional amateurs' can go a long way towards enriching life.

People complaining about technology and innovation are extremely amusing and very ridiculous. You don't have to get involved, so what has anyone else's participation got to do with you? Nothing, but grumpy old men just want something to complain about, and because it's new and it involves young people many moaners and complainers target it. Your objection is one step away from the 'milkman's cheery whistle'. You've gone out of your way top pick a fight over something you don't happen to like, and now that you have been shown up you are reporting posts that illustrate how wrong you are - I only defended it as passionately and succinctly as you attacked it. If you can't take it then don't dish it out. You would serve your cause better if you just admitted you were a little bit pig-headed about it and graciously accepted that your disdain for a thing is not a compelling argument against it.

What is most ironic is that this site itself, specifically the pub section IS a social networking site. It's even named after an social networking venue.

Yeah, but it doesn't put a lot of personal info out there. Which, granted, you can change settings on for most other sites that do put a lot of personal info out there, but still.

I for one welcome any technology that allows me to know what Stephen Fry is doing at every single minute of the day....

Has the Daily Mail condemned Twitter as the cause of knife crime and teenage pregnancy yet? Can only be a matter of time...
