What the fuck is there to be proud of in being gay?

By all means, it's nothing to be ashamed of. But being proud of it is taking it too far.
It's like being proud of being American, or British, or white or brown or whatever.

It's fucking idiotic. You didn't do anything. You were born that way.

Maybe you could take pride in coming out, in a world that's still prejudiced. But that's not the same thing as "proud to be gay".

Would Abingdon have to fly a "proud to be straight" flag to be seen as fair? That might not go down too well.

In some future world with zero prejudice anywhere, it might well be pointless. In the current world, it is simply a bit of understandable bravado.

"Gay pride" is a reaction to the sentiment that homosexuality is something to be ashamed of, much the same as "black is beautiful" was a slogan by African Americans a few decades ago. I find that more understandable than people saying they are proud to be (insert nationality here).

That's the point. To counter the people who say there is something wrong with being gay.

To repress is the worst thing with sexuality. Especially if there is a religious household and circle holding you in that dungeon of the mind. Gay pride marches are a chance to express after centuries of religious and secular persecution, and much better than that to show society is changing.
