Re: China bans depictions of gay people on television
When there's plenty of homophobia in the country, I would say it makes sense to keep gay propaganda off the air waves.
You hit people over the heads with gay blunt instruments, and they will tend to rebel, while the attitudes are still hard.
The Chinese governments are not keen to have people reacting against their main social control tools.
If there was an appetite for gay issues in the country, they would probably not worry too much about it being aired in public.

That's the Mary Whitehouse approach to gay liberation. It didn't work.mistermack wrote:When there's plenty of homophobia in the country, I would say it makes sense to keep gay propaganda off the air waves.

No shit Sherlockmistermack wrote:The Chinese governments are not keen to have people reacting against their main social control tools.
So let's all pander to government homophobia because there's lots of homophobia around anyway.mistermack wrote:If there was an appetite for gay issues in the country, they would probably not worry too much about it being aired in public.

Re: China bans depictions of gay people on television
That's not actually what you said though. You expressed support for the Chinese Government's ban on depicting gay people on television. So the thing you don't give a toss about is gay rights in China.mistermack wrote:I'm not pandering to it.Exi5tentialist wrote:That's the Mary Whitehouse approach to gay liberation. Make that anywhere.Exi5tentialist wrote: That's not actually what you said though. You expressed support for the Chinese Government's ban on depicting gay people on television. So the thing you don't give a toss about is gay rights in China.
Not gay rights, but the campaign for gay rights. I'm happy enough to see prejudice dwindle, but don't give a toss about fighting for it.

Although you're not averse to giving a toss about opposing it (the campagn for gay rights).mistermack wrote:Make that anywhere.Exi5tentialist wrote: That's not actually what you said though.
