7 of the kids were hers. The 8th was a niece.

I don't think all of the dead kids were hers.

I had my suspicions since there has been no talk of anyone else being sought in this case, no speculation in the press about intruders, etc. I suspect that the knife woulds she suffered were likely from a failed attempt at suicide following the killings.

Of course, she may turn out to be innocent yet, but I am not holding my breath.

Yeah, I just found that out online, and apparently she was 37, not sure were I got 34 as her age.

The police releases kept referring to the mother as "a person of interest". I always translate that term as "We are seriously suspicious, given the circumstances, but have no evidence whatsoever that would either confirm or invalidate those suspicions".

Altogether, it's a horrible tragedy, and not just the murders themselves. Try to imagine what misery, probably beginning many years leading up to the killings led up to them.

An interesting aside to this will be watching the media bumble their way through the cultural sensitivities. The family is of Torres Straight Islander (one indigenous community here in Oz) heritage, and there are cultural laws regarding naming and producing images of the dead.

I think this this bit of the news reports practically screams "we're waiting to arrest the mother":

Police have said there are no formal suspects at this time, with investigation ongoing. However, they stress the public is not at risk.

Australia seems to share the Irish (and perhaps) British tradition for very oblique crime reporting and police statements.
