To pretend the Mideast is not the problem of an energy addicted society is to pretend there's some other high density liquid energy already on the market at competitive prices. Moreover, to yield the resource to China at reduced prices (which will certainly be the case when American demand is taken away from existing ME supplies in whatever Libertarian isolationist fantasy scenario one cares to spin) is tantamount to granting the ChiComs (and everyone else) a massive competitive advantage over American business.
The US Government is not in business to put us back on whale oil for the benefit of the starving Chinese, hence our strategic presence in the Middle East.
