And it seems there were at least two people on board that were using passports that had been stolen previously in Thailand.

Two names listed on the passenger list of the missing Malaysian Airlines flight match passports reported stolen in Thailand, foreign ministry officials in Rome and Vienna have confirmed.

Italy’s foreign ministry said that an Italian man whose name was listed as being on board the Boeing 777 is travelling in Thailand and was not on the plane. A foreign ministry official confirmed Italian reports that Luigi Maraldi had reported his passport stolen last August. Italian news agency Ansa said Mr Maraldi called home after hearing reports that an Italian with his name was on board the missing aircraft.

And an Austrian reported to have been aboard the plane is safe at home and his passport was stolen, a Foreign Ministry spokesman in Vienna has confirmed. “Our embassy got the information that there was an Austrian on board. That was the passenger list from Malaysia Airlines. “Our system came back with a note that this is a stolen passport,” he said. Police found the man at his home. The passport was stolen two years ago while he was travelling in Thailand, the spokesman said.

The water in the gulf is only about fifty metres deep, so they should find it.
