Given that it's fact that the poor are statistically more overweight than the wealthier classes (who can afford good food and gym subscriptions), what is it, if not McD, Pizzas and soft drinks that makes them fat?Gawdzilla wrote:Which dumbass was it that was saying poor people are fat because they eat at McDonald's all the time?maiforpeace wrote:Who usually applies for a job in the army?
The poor.
Who are also more likely to be less educated and overweight.

Actually, that's not untrue. For the poor McDonald's is pretty cheap stuff, and much more accessable than fresh, healthy foods. You know what markets are like in the poor areas of cities - a lot of booze, pre-prepared stuff, not a lot of fresh produce or meat. And expensive.Gawdzilla wrote:Which dumbass was it that was saying poor people are fat because they eat at McDonald's all the time?maiforpeace wrote:Who usually applies for a job in the army?

I think there's a segment in Food Inc. about it.

Dollar a pound balogna, for one. The cheapest foods are the worst for you. Feed a family of six for a week on $50 and see what you end up serving.

Feed a family of six two meals a day for a week at McDonalds and see what you come up with for a dollar figure. When I was a kid McD's was a once in a blue moon event.maiforpeace wrote:Actually, that's not untrue. What's easier...having the time and where with all to drag bagfuls of groceries from the Walmart across town, cook the food from scratch, or stopping at the McDonalds a block away? Especially if you have to work two or three jobs to support your family?Gawdzilla wrote:Feed a family of six two meals a day for a week at McDonalds and see what you come up with for a dollar figure. So was it for me... which probably was the reason I spent so much of my allowance there once one opened in Bordeaux.Gawdzilla wrote:Feed a family of six two meals a day for a week at McDonalds and see what you come up with for a dollar figure. And food banks are big on "non-perishable items", so canned and preserved food gets is given most often. Fresh food is donated and accepted only when it can be moved to the end-user in a timely fashion.Bella Fortuna wrote:Yep.maiforpeace wrote:Exactly.Gawdzilla wrote:Dollar a pound balogna, for one. Hey, I once gave a presentation on how a person can survive on a $100-a-month food budget.
I know it can be done because I used to do it (not that I was that desperate, just kinda cheap about feeding myself when I was single). I don't want to discuss how healthy it was though. Ramen noodles, iceburg lettuce and vitamins featured prominently...

For a family of six, that's $600/month or half of what Ayaan brings home each month.Ian wrote:Hey, I once gave a presentation on how a person can survive on a $100-a-month food budget.

That's my point...the expensive crap food at the little markets found in inner cities and the crap food at MacDonalds. Otherwise, they need both the time and the transportation, which are both resources that require $$$ to get to better food resources. It's a trade off, and unfortunately they usually end up picking the former since it's the easiest and probably ends up costing as much as the other anyway.Gawdzilla wrote:What can they afford?maiforpeace wrote:What's easier...having the time and where with all to drag bagfuls of groceries from the Walmart across town, cook the food from scratch, or stopping at the McDonalds a block away? Of course, I am specifically addressing the poor in cities. If my nephew and his family as an example of the poor in a rural area though, they also follow the same pattern.

I'm sorry, but you can fed better with the same amount of money if you cook at home. This may require the older kids to do the lion's share of work, but that's called character development.
