Is it Possible to be Both an Atheist and a Jew?

Many Merkins want to dissociate themselves from their US passport for tax reasons, Austrian and Bulgarian passports feature high on the desirability list, ha, ha! Only fair if tax considerations rank as high as or higher than religious ones. Very difficult to get rid of one's passport though, impossible in the case of US-passport, and all the cultural, religious and political implications associated with it. "You are where you come from", to quote Malcolm Cladwell in his "Outliers", a book I recommend heartily.charlou wrote:I can't help feeling optimistic that people are taking a personal stand and taking steps to remove themselves from traditional and formalised assocation with religion. I can very much understand the reasoning behind wanting to disassociate oneself from it on a personal level, and the desire to be removed from the statistics that are used to 'bolster' religious credibility, including financial and political power.

I've heard numerous people describe themselves as "Jewish atheists". I think it's hilarious, considering that Judaism isn't a culture, but a religion, but hey, maybe it's a bit like all the white Aborigines around - they want to identify themselves with a certain group of people, and do so by labelling themselves as such.

I was going to remove myself from the Catholic Church but I can't do it right now as they're renewing their process for defection, or something.

A friend in Germany wanted to remove himself from the protestant church. He was told he had to go back to the original church he was Baptised in, which no longer existed. It has been amalgamated into another church. He would have had to have travelled several hunderd kms to do it, and so is still a member of the church...

The thing is that if you're an atheist, there's no point in remaining a cultural Jew, since most of their culture and customs revolve around religious taboos and festivals.Deersbee wrote:There are millions of Jewish atheists in the world, only in Russia there are several million, to mention but several.

The Jews I'm talking about consider themselves no less Jews for being atheists.Svartalf wrote:The thing is that if you're an atheist, there's no point in remaining a cultural Jew, since most of their culture and customs revolve around religious taboos and festivals.Deersbee wrote:There are millions of Jewish atheists in the world, only in Russia there are several million, to mention but several.

As culture and religion are not mutually exclusive, I'd say Judaism is both. Think memes.nellikin wrote:considering that Judaism isn't a culture, but a religion,

Oh, well, if she is black, too, there may be some difficulties to get sufficient votes. But, at least, it's technically possible.Deersbee wrote:In which respect Israel is not at all unique in the world. According to the article you did quote it is impossible to be an atheist in Israel for everybody, so where is the discrimination?Gawd wrote:I quote the lack of Arabic-Jew atheists in existence in Israel.Seraph wrote:Quote the bit in the article from which such a conclusion can be drawn.Gawd wrote:Guess what happens differently to a Jew-Jew compared to an Arabic-Jew if both become atheists?
