Except that government SOLD that radio spectrum to private companies, so it's no longer a "shared resource."
So its private property and you can do whatever you want with it!, only in planet Libertarian is this true, even America isnt that yet
Actually, pretty much yes. If you bought a segment of the spectrum, subject to technical requirements to prevent interference with other frequencies, you can do what you want with the spectrum. That's why you can get porn on satellite, but not on broadcast TV, and why radio-link internet (like WiFi) is not subject to FCC jurisdiction.
Yep. People license radio frequencies, and TV broadcast channels, same thing here.

Some parts of the spectrum are licensed, and some sold outright. Cell phone, satellite and other broadband frequencies are not licensed, they are the property of the companies who bought them at auction. Other parts of the spectrum, like the HAM bands, police frequencies and many others are still licensed however.

We have a similar system in my city, and the government has abused it to send out all sorts of alerts to the whole city that concern maybe one street. I predict the same with the national system. There should be a way to opt out.

I will modify my position on this and side with those looking for an opt out. I read an article indicating that the Obama administration would be giving themselves the right to send out "important announcements." That's code for "political sales pitches." I should have known that there is no good idea that the crooks and charlatans in our government won't corrupt for political gain.
