Well you are right of course but it depends on how poor they want to be. It would be a great deal so as things stand.Santa_Claus wrote:Of course Scotland could be viable as an independent Nation. Couldn't do it tommorow, but once the institutions are in place.......
Whether it would become a great place to live is another thing - my guess is it would stay a shithole backwater, but no fundamental reason why it couldn't prosper.
If I was a Haggis muncher I would go for Independence, simply because my Government's policies would be all about Scotland - and not about keeping voters in Milton Keynes happy.
My bet is that Salmond goes for an all UK Referendum..........he is a canny f#cker, and playing the long game means he wins as folks in England never think more than a month ahead.

Re: An Independent Scotland?
What most folks think of for an independent Scotland is a simple line on the map and each side withdrawing behind the new border (Passport to Pimlico style) - whereas in the modern world countries are normally heavily interconnected (especially to geographic neighbours) both culturally / people wise and economically.........that doesn't need to change.
No reason why could not be very inventive on the terms of seperation (more of a process than a single date event) - Independent Scotland keeps the Royal Family (as Scottish Queen / King) and signs up to be part of Britain on specific terms (but withdraws from the UK), possibly including joint defence and joint exploitation of the oil (plenty of scope for doing a complex deal seperating territorial waters from Oil rights, and maybe treating existing oil discoveries different from future?).
Although Cameron is all pro Union at the moment, if the the circumstances arise where cutting 40(?) Labour MP's out of Westminster is an option would be a tempter...........just a matter of selling "New Britain" to the great unwashed (in England).....plus if Scotland really is a net drain on the London Excheqeur, then why wouldn't the English want to dump that cost?

Well Northern Ireland is the UK's equivalent of Texas, would be very glad to see the back of them through that obviously doesnt mean there arent decent people there but the religious bigotry just isn't worth the grief.
Scotland going would be bad through the thought of the Tories in England is just very scary

If Scotland goes independent, how long until the Bluebonnets come over the border?

Fook the UK! Up Bonnie Prince Charlie! Let the Bear Gates at Traquair House be opened! Give all themistermack wrote:If Cameron had any balls, he would tell Salmond where to stick his demands for more powers. That's a matter for the UK government, not him.
And breaking up the UK would be a matter for a UK referendum, not a Scottish one.
And the North Sea belongs to the people of Britain, and I can't see them voting to give it away.
Sassenachs down south the chop! It'll be Culloden all over again.
