Re: Aggressive secularist? Watch out for the Cardinals!
Christianity has a historical legacy of over 1,900 years and currently is the largest monotheism with over 2 billion followers, so where anyone gets this idea that it is on the wane is beyond me. Islam is the fastest growing religion, but it only has 1.3 billion.
When it was introduced here in England, it was forced on unsuspecting Pagans - some of whom ended up losing their life for refusing to convert. Then their feast days were misappropriated or alternative ones were devised to replace them - Christmas Day for Winter Solstice. Easter was originally a celebration of fertility and nothing to do with the Ressurrection. Saint Augustine believed that torture was morally acceptable and used it against heretics. This led directly to the Inquisition. Muslims, like Pagans before were killed if they refused to convert during The Crusades. The aggressive secularism that exists today manifests itself through the bloodless medium of debate - no one dies.
The total number of times that homosexuality is referenced in The Bible is out of all proportion to the time invested in condemning by some. Jesus himself said absolutely nothing about it. But homophobia exists just as much outside religion as in it, so even if it was non-existent in Scripture it would make zero difference.
I believe everyone should have the freedom to believe whatever they want - as long as such beliefs do not impinge on the freedoms of others. It is perfectly acceptable that Christians should have that. But they do not get a free ride - if something is morally questionable in their philosophy, then it should be challenged and challenged vigourously. Religion should not be above criticism - nothing should. The Cardinal cannot be responsible for the past, but he quite clearly thinks that gays and lesbians should not be treated the same as everyone else. That is wrong - they are human beings like and should be treated accordingly. He does not have the right to judge them - doubly ironic considering this is something Jesus instructed us not to do and that I agree with him on, even though I am an atheist.
I have nothing against Christians and some aspects of Christianity are morally acceptable - The Seven Commandments / The Sermon On The Mount / The Parables - so we should try and avoid this eternal battle between secularism and religion. But some things need to be thrashed out. If the only difference between us was supernatural belief and not moral instruction, then all would be hunky dory. Alas, not so. But that is not an excuse for not trying.
