When I was growing up, the predictions were for personal nuclear powered transportation and flying cars.

Now the predictions for 40 years from now are this:

Cities would be so much nicer without cars.

Turn the streets into pedestrian malls. I've loved those since Buenos Aries.

good plan.
Our struggle is not against actual corrupt individuals, but against those in power in general, against their authority, against the global order and the ideological mystification which sustains it.

That's pretty ridiculous. I'd bet per capita emissions in the U.S. are much higher for people who live in the country than for those who live in cities.

The reason for the figures quoted is simple: the people who don't cause a lot of emissions live in poorly developed countries, which also happen to have low levels of urbanization. No one wants to admit this, though, because it implies the solution to climate change is for the rich countries to keep the poor countries from developing, which is obviously patently unfair.

Cutting CO2 emissions by 60% in the next 40 years should be easy for Europe, though. The natural result of rising fossil fuel prices will be higher efficiency, which will reduce consumption as the fossil fuels run out. Granted they'd have to limit immigration to prevent population growth from making up the difference.

Many more streets have been transformed into pedestrian malls in NYC in recent years. As a pedestrian, I'm a huge fan. And I'm told that the malls have actually done quite a bit to reduce traffic congestion throughout Manhattan-- through some traffic-planning hoobie-joobie that I admit I don't fully understand.

Hell, I don't even have a driver's license anymore. I haven't driven regularly since I moved to Boston in 1993. In Boston and NYC, a car is more a hindrance than a help.

Cities would be a lot nicer without so many damn people.

They'll get my pickup when they pry my cold dead hands off the steering wheel.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.
