Re: Columbia Professor Charged With Incest
I'm pretty much amoral, so I wouldn't couch it in terms of morality. It's just creepy as hell. But then again, IMO so is slicing the head of your dick open, but apparently some people get off on genital self-mutilation. Again,

Re: Columbia Professor Charged With Incest
The key word is, I agree, 'consensual' and if it truly is then it should not be anybody else's business. However how do you ascertain that when it is a 50 year old father and woman in her early 20s? The authority of a parent over offspring can take many forms. Perhaps she felt she had no choice. Perhaps she felt threatened or unable to refuse, in which case he clearly has done something wrong.
The fact of incest with an adult should not be criminal in this day and age. After all the taboo is mainly associated with genetic complications, which are so easily avoided these days. Abuse of power though should be.
Not, no doubt, that the arrest in this case will explore the subtleties of that.

Re: Columbia Professor Charged With Incest
The whole thought of it makes me want to boke as well, but because it is consensual what I, you or anyone else in the world thinks doesn't matter a jot (except, perhaps, with regard to them procreating) - our opinions should not infringe on their concept of non-destructive personal happiness and the law should never be involved.Ian wrote:Why? This isn't even an adult step-daughter, it's the guy's daughter. Re: Columbia Professor Charged With Incest
All this stuff about consent and a victimless crime is bollocks.
If this isn't illegal, it's open to abuse. Say the age of consent is sixteen. A father has sixteen years to condition his daughter into doing whatever he says. Then, the day after her sixteenth birthday, he fucks her, with her "consent" and they can't touch him for it.
Also, we are all victims of this kind of behaviour.
I have a lot of nieces and nephews. When they were young, I was always very careful not to be too affectionate, or close. Because I knew that if they were my kids, I would secretly keep my eyes open for any sign of anything improper.
That very necessary vigilance is the price we all pay because of the abuse by others.
They rob you of innocence.
This sort of stuff robs everyone of the blameless innocent affection that we should all have been entitled to.
Because of this fucker, and others like him, men can't be quite as innocently affectionate towards their daughters as they otherwise could.
So I say lock the fucker up, and throw away the key.

Re: Columbia Professor Charged With Incest
First, the evidence incest between consenting adults is a crime without referring to religious rules, please?mistermack wrote:I would lock em both up. That is, if they really had only only been at it for the three years, but I wouldn't believe that for one minute.
I think Woody Allen should have been locked up. If you accept a child as a step-child, it should be classed as incest, because you are betraying a responsibility you took on as a parent.
You can make a case for excusing the younger partner, as growing up is a confusing time, but the elder one has no excuse. All you have to do is say no.
.
Second, she was 21, she was "legal" since whatever age she would have to be in that state, so why the double-standard? The younger party is not automatically the innocent one in these cases.

Re: Columbia Professor Charged With Incest
In my opinion, it would be different if the daughter and father did not know each other beforehand (like the well known German brother and sister who are lovers)...but this man did have the opportunity to 'groom' his victim her entire life. Just because she is of the age of consent, and gives consent does not automatically mean there still isn't sexual abuse going on here.
But that's not what he is being charged with, is it?

Mai, I dated a gal in Indiana who was, with her four sisters, totally in love with their father. He was extremely handsome, very fun, and a great dad. I got the strong impression that any of them would have hopped in the sack with him at finger crook.

Re: Columbia Professor Charged With Incest
As far as I know, he didn't have her locked up in a basement or anything. By the age of 24, she's had exposure to sex ed, the newspapers, friends, family, society and the Internet. It's hard for me to imagine that she could've been emotionally or psychologically coerced at that age. Not saying it's impossible, but just very, very improbable given the informed, urban environment suggested by the story.

Re: Columbia Professor Charged With Incest
That's exactly what crossed my mind when I read the article. I've been reading this guy's stuff on HP for a while now, he's bright, smart and attractive. He's a Columbia professor so he doesn't lack for young, beautiful women to have affairs with.Gawdzilla wrote:Mai, I dated a gal in Indiana who was, with her four sisters, totally in love with their father. EDIT:
It happens all the time though. Adults can fall prey to brainwashing and grooming.FBM wrote:As far as I know, he didn't have her locked up in a basement or anything. It will be interesting to hear what the daughter has to say about all this. And the mother. I also want to know exactly how these charges came about.
