Standing in for David Cameron at Prime Minister’s Question Time, he conceded that he had “not been able to deliver the policy that we held in opposition” after abandoning a pledge to scrap university fees altogether.
Instead, the Liberal Democrats last week signed up to Coalition plans to allow institutions to charge up to £9,000 a year.
I don't blame Cameron at all for his opportunism - I think it shows his canniness as a politician, but what in under of fuck was Clegg thinking about going in to that coalition? The Lib Dems will be completely wiped out at the next election - if the Tories' policies start to pay off and the nation starts to recover then Cameron will receive all the plaudits and the Tories will win a landslide at the expense of the Lib Dems. Likewise, if it all fucks up Labour will destroy the Lib Dems - the electorate expects the Tories to be brutal, but they will not forgive the Lib Dems for being complicit. The next election promises to be seriously polarised, with people moving further away from the centre which is the Lib Dems natural constituency.
