Anyway, it's been a problem for some time now, the only difference is that Islam has been recieving special treatment since 9/11 and they've been taking advantage of it.

Exactly, and in the case of the Disneyland thing, the union is taking advantage of it too.

Disneyland spokeswoman Suzi Brown said Disney has a policy not to discriminate. The resort offered Boudlal a chance to work with the head covering away from customers while Disneyland tries to find a compromise that would allow Boudlal to cover her head in a way that fits with her hostess uniform, Brown said.

"Typically, somebody in an on-stage position like hers wouldn't wear something like that, that's not part of the costume," Brown said. "We were trying to accommodate her with a backstage position that would allow her to work. We gave her a couple of different options and she chose not to take those and to go home."

I really can't get a sense of how much she stands out and what kind "Costume" or "Uniform" it's supposed to be from the article.

Actually, in the article you posted I don't see why she should have to remove it.

Disney's entire business is based on tight control of their image.

She has a right to be muslim. I'm not sure she has a right to wear the head scarf; she didn't have a problem leaving it at home for Ramadan in the last two years, so it's not all that critical to her religious beliefs. I don't think she has a right to demand that they keep her in a customer facing position show she can show her scarf to the public on company time.

Allowing her to work in a non customer facing position while she wears her own head scarf seems perfectly reasonable to me. In the meantime, Disney is working on figuring out a head scarf that actually does fit their look, which seems to me to be bending over backwards to accomodate her.

EDIT: I agree with Dew. Disney is extremely strict about this, and it does affect their image. The Disney image is to be as generic and consistent as possible when it comes to how the workers are dressed as part of the fantasy they are trying to create. Her wearing a headscarf would affect it, and would be a big departure from their image.

I highly doubt she went to her interview in a headscarf, and if she had they probably would not have hired her. Even if they had, I feel certain they would not have put her in a PR role as a hostess.

Having had several friends and family that work for Disney I know how ridiculous they are about the appearance of everyone including even the lowest positions. It's not a religious issue, it's about their freedom to decide what kind of face they want to project to the public. I agree with everything Warren said.

The Jasmine character is in Mickey's Philharmagic 3D show at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom. She's flying around on a magic carpet with Alladin, they are blowing a breeze in the theatre and then they fly out into the audience...when she came up to my 7 year old niece's face, Maykayla sighed and remarked "they're romantic!" It was really cute.

The head-scarf thing is totally not an issue with me - you see all the important details of a person's face...

The burka thing, I am in two minds about a general ban; I detest the bloody things, and they are emblematic of female oppression, but there are civil liberties issues as well...
