I understand that more and more businesses are making it a prerequisite that you already have a job. They'd rather not be hiring out of that useless sector of people who are unemployed.

That's my generation fucked.

So the article says that millions of workers are needed and employers just cannot find suitable workers .....well that seems to me to be the problem of the employers ? not being an to hold an interview or being so ready to dismiss a candidate out of hand for superficial reasons .

Psychoserenity wrote:Ridiculous as the article from the onion obviously is, this, Who Knows Best: Getting a Job, is the second reality/documentary TV program I've seen recently, where "experts" try to "tackle unemployment" by teaching some unemployed people interview techniques! They actually seemed completely oblivious to the fact that getting one individual a job, just means that someone else can't get that job.
Fucking idiots. :x
For any individual, the important thing is getting a job. So, being able to demonstrate that one is qualified is quite important.

Also, most people who get jobs already have jobs, and leave a job opening behind. So, if people are "moving up" the quicker they get out of the entry level job, the quicker someone else can fill that entry level job. It's like a data entry person proving he is ready to move to programming. If he doesn't prove he is qualified, he stays in his entry level job, and some guy who needs that entry level job doesn't get in there.

There are always alternatives.

Overcome. Improvise. Adapt.

Don't be a pussy and just cry about being fucked. Change positions, get on top, and start doing your own fucking.

LOL - you do know the article isn't serious?

But, so what? - if a person comes to me looking for a job, it's up to them to prove they can do it. They don't have to work for me.

The Mad Hatter wrote:Apparently "Full Employment" is roughly 5% unemployment...
Actually, that's true (although I always thought it was more like 3 to 4%). 100% employment is completely impossible (except in the history of some communist countries which used to bullshit their numbers). Even when the economy is booming, a certain percentage will always be between jobs, away from work for periods of time, seasonal workers, trust-fund babies, and otherwise not working for reasons other than being unable to find a job.

The article seemed a little stupid... but I have come to expect that .

LOL - that's neither here nor there. Well, in the quantum world that's both here and there, but that's beside the point. Or, beside the wave.

Nevertheless, if a person is out of work, they ought to look around and see what's available for them to do. Nobody is locked in. I run into people with lots of money all the time, and they are people doing things that you would be totally surprised about. People make tons of money, for example, running cleaning businesses - getting accounts with offices and businesses around town and cleaning the offices. It takes very low overhead, and almost no investment. Just call yourself ABC Cleaners, join the chamber of commerce, network, and undercut the competition on price. Work your ass off and build a book of business, etc.

I've seen it with my own eyes - you'd be surprised how much the guy/gal running those businesses make. They hire folks at minimum wage, have them clean the floors, empty the garbage cans, and clean the bathrooms, and then make the spread between the contract price and the wages + materials. Done. Anyone can do it.

Think of all the businesses like that that are out there.

I know a lawyer who is going to return to nursing school.

I know a person dropped a white collar job, moved to where it was warm and started his own lawn care business - and loves every fucking minute of it.

This depression is time for creativity and imagination. Is the US the land of the free and the home of the brave? Or, are we the land of the timorous and home of the cowardly? Fight! God damn it! Fight!

Can I quote you to my cousin in Bergen, the next time he and I debate politics?

Wehey, that's the same city I'm being unproductive in.

You may quote me, though I've yet to show my work (not even going to bother rummaging for a punch-line for that one, too easy)
