Trump promised to deport millions. What part did they not get?

For one thing, Trump’s higher-profile arrests and deportations are demonstrating that ordinary voters who wanted a more orderly immigration system—and believe this is what Trump promised—are recoiling at the forced removals of unauthorized immigrants who have, to varying degrees, integrated into American life.

The best recent example of this is the Trump voter from Missouri who said of Carol Hui’s arrest: “No one voted to deport moms.” This has prompted chortling online, with many citing those “Mass Deportation Now” signs and saying: You absolutely did vote to deport moms.

But as data analyst G. Elliott Morris explains, even if that’s technically true, data shows that majorities do not want to deport “moms” or other unauthorized immigrants who haven’t committed serious crimes and have assimilated in some meaningful sense. Morris looked at recent polling on various types of deportations—of people who have lived here for over 10 years, or haven’t broken non-immigration-related laws, orhave jobs here and no criminal record—and found all of them deeply underwater with the public.

Fired fed employees all done with Trump. It was not waste and fraud...at least not wages.

"Some fired federal employees, especially those at retirement age or who have since secured jobs in the private sector, are proving reluctant to return. So the administration is seeking work-arounds and stopgaps, including asking remaining staff to serve in new roles, work overtime or volunteer to fill vacancies, according to interviews with 18 federal workers across eight agencies and messages obtained by The Washington Post. A Post review found recent messy re-hirings at agencies including the Food and Drug Administration, the IRS, the State Department and the Department of Housing and Urban Development."

But not all the dismissed employees are excited about returning. Some are reluctant to work for an administration that has shown it does not support the mission. Others don't want to have to live with the uncertainty.

"In April, when the Trump administration offered early retirement, the employee leaped at it and was soon placed on administrative leave.

"A few days later, former colleagues reached out: The government was now looking to fill the person’s job again. Did they want back in?

“I was like, yep, nope, I’m not risking it again,” the employee said. “I’m gonna try to take the money and try to find something else.”

Hegseth itching to send marines to rough up porotestors.

“I think the president did exactly what he needed to do,” Johnson told ABC News' "This Week" co-anchor Jonathan Karl on Sunday.

“That is real leadership and he has the authority and the responsibility to do it,” the speaker said, defending Trump’s decision.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said he is prepared to mobilize Marines if the violence continues. Pressed if sending Marines into the streets of American cities is warranted, Johnson said, “We have to be prepared to do what is necessary.”

So what does Trump do when he’s humiliated? He deflects public attention. Like any bully, he tries to find another way to display his power — especially over people who are powerless, such as immigrants. Especially over people whom he doesn’t consider “his” people, such as Californians.

He has despised California since the 2016 election when the state overwhelmingly voted against him.

And what better Ground Zero for him to try out his police state than Los Angeles — a city teaming with immigrants, with Hollywood celebrities who demonize him, and wealthy moguls who despise him?

He is calling out the National Guard to provoke violence. As Governor Newsom said, “that move is purposefully inflammatory and will only escalate tensions.”

Trump wants to escalate tensions. He wants a replay of the violence that occurred in the wake of the George Floyd murder — riots, mayhem, and destruction that allow him to escalate his police state further — imposing curfews, closing down parts of Los Angeles, perhaps seeking to subdue the entire state. And beyond.

Please do not give him this. Don’t fall into his trap.

We cannot be silent in the face of Trump’s dictatorial move. Silence is acquiescence. We must be brave in resisting him. But we must not succumb to violence.
