Re: The Donald-thread
Existing as basically a meme inspiring people to blow things up is going to be very hard for anyone to destroy, whether that is Clinton or Trump.

That is a main point, and one that clinton supporters use in favor of their awful candidate, too. No argument there.Brian Peacock wrote:I think this just goes to show a general tendency in Trump supports, the main thing they can say in favour of his candidacy is something-or-other about Clinton.Forty Two wrote:Hillary Clinton - "I have a plan to fight ISIS, which I opted not to use while I was Secretary of State." Vote Trump. He sure ain't Clinton!
The main things I like about Trump are his non-Republican view on trade policy, his mostly disinterest in social issues, his lack of connection with and support from the mainstream, establishment power brokers, politicians and interest groups (they loathe him, and I like the fact that they don't want him in there) - the fact that Republicans like Jeb Bush and that gang bandied about voting for Hillary Clinton over Trump is not a reason I see to vote for Hillary - quite the opposite, actually. If they like her, then she's doubly suspect. He's a dick. He's a hard-ass. But, I trust him to act in the best interests of the US and not in furtherance of an ideology or interest groups that funded him - I think he wants to win, and if he's leading the US and succeeds halfway toward what he's talking about on trade, jobs and immigration, he will be a great President.
Much of the nasty shit he says is unfortunate, of course. But, we've gotten peeks here and there about what the proper politicians say behind closed doors - Clinton's "living in parent's basements," Romney and his "half of the country wants handouts...", Bill Clinton sexing up interns with a cigar and fucking everything that moves, Lyndon Johnson holding meetings in his bathroom while he's taking a shit and banging secretaries two at a time, Kennedy working with mob bosses and banging Marilyn Monroe and others in the white house, saying "I'm not finished with a woman until I've had her three ways...", Hillary Clinton calling people Jew bastards and telling Secret Service people to fuck off, and on and on and on -- if you had a microphone on these people 24-7 we'd see a lot of Trumpish talk going on all the time. People who think Trump is unique in expressing the sentiment that some other folks should "go fuck themselves" are not accepting the reality that all these fuckers talk like that - Trump is unique only in the fact that he seems to have no worry about speaking his mind this way publicly.

Depending on how one defines the term, possibly yes. In what sense are you using the term "liberal?" In American politics, a "liberal" would normally be against the free trade agreements Trump is against.pErvin wrote:non-liberal, don't you mean?Forty Two wrote: The main things I like about Trump are his non-Republican view on trade policy,
I've explained my position on it in the past, wherein the free trade agreements are not in actuality free trade regimes when there are two radically different legal regimes under which two countries operate. It's not "liberal" for example, to drop trade barriers between country X (with high minimum wage, high tax, and burdensome regulatory schemes) and country Y (low minimum wage, low tax, and virtually nonexistent regulatory regime). The dropping of the trade barriers will be good for big businesses who can build manufacturing plants and move operations from country X to country Y, and that may result in some benefits to country X in terms of cheap imports and the benefits growing from cheap imports, but it also sucks the industry out of country X over time and eventually country X won't be the attractive market it was at the time the trade barriers drop. When that happens, the imports will stop coming. When that happens, country X is in big economic trouble.

Trade liberalisation. Free trade.Forty Two wrote:Depending on how one defines the term, possibly yes. In what sense are you using the term "liberal?" It's not necessarily illiberal. That can form the basis of "comparative advantage".I've explained my position on it in the past, wherein the free trade agreements are not in actuality free trade regimes when there are two radically different legal regimes under which two countries operate. It's not "liberal" for example, to drop trade barriers between country X (with high minimum wage, high tax, and burdensome regulatory schemes) and country Y (low minimum wage, low tax, and virtually nonexistent regulatory regime).
What's definitely illiberal is protectionism.
