The military salaries are being paid--that theoretically could be cut off on Feb. 1, but Congress and the president could continue the military payroll even beyond that date in the eventuality that the shutdown continues that long.

President Donald Trump and the Defense Department would have broad authority to keep running whatever military operations they deemed necessary.

All active-duty military personnel would keep working in the event of a shutdown. They would be paid up to Feb. 1, and then continue on the job without getting paid until the shutdown ended or until Congress and the president agreed to cover their costs before it ended.

I agree that Congress critters shouldn't be paid during a government shutdown that they themselves have caused.

It is certainly a cause of huge puzzlement - not to mention astonishment - that the country which until very recently liked to think it led the world has to actually 'shut down' it's government employees on a regular basis like this.
