Re: Why shoot to kill?
I think the idea is that there is no such thing as shooting not to kill. By suggesting that he should have been hit in the shoulder, you give too much credit to the accuracy of snipers shooting at a person moving around, from a weird angle, though a window, wind, light, etc.mistermack wrote:There's no point in debating a DIFFERENT situation.Tigger wrote:Fuck him, and anyone else who takes up a gun. I have no sympathy for people who brandish weapons. Anyway, what's a wound? It's not over-effective to "just shoot someone in the leg". Hit the femoral artery and they're dead anyway, and the philosophy is shoot to stop. Unfortunately, in the real world and not the Bruce Willis word of flesh wounds, that probably means kill.
I'm saying "why shoot to kill" when they clearly don't need to.
And it's easy to say "Fuck him" when it's not YOUR brother, or son, or friend.
It's easy to be callous about others. Not so easy when it's your own.
This guy WAS stopped, he was in a second floor window.
He couldn't get out. If he tried to, then I would say 'fuck him' myself.
But they KNEW he wanted them to shoot. Why not hit him once in the shoulder?
.
Maybe they should employ less lethal technologies in these instances - like shoot him with a tranquilizer. Someone might be able to tell my why this is not practical.

Re: Why shoot to kill?
My OP was about the sort of training and procedures that the police employ.
I don't really have any quibble with what they did in this case, because, as the coroner pointed out, they just work to training and laid down procedures. They're not going to go outside these, they have to cover their own backs.
Like I said, police weapons training comes straight from the army manuals. It shouldn't.
The army is training some people who hardly have the brains to scratch their own ass.
To make sure they don't just shoot each other, they have simple drills and do it over and over again.
You would think that the police intake nets a few more brain cells.
And those selected for weapons training and management of this type of operation should have more still.
And yet they employ no "common sense" as the coroner put it, they just work to laid down procedures similar to army ones.
Even if these guys WANTED to shoot to wound, they couldn't.
Otherwise, the whole resposibility for what came after would be laid on them.
Police chief constables these days are just like politicians. If something goes badly, they pass the buck and blame an underling, so it's not surprising everyone sticks to the book.
I'm just saying that procedures should be scrapped, their should be ONE experienced guy giving the orders, and he should make the decision on the spot, not from manuals, and should be backed to the hilt and immune from comebacks, if things turn out badly.

OK, so when a brilliant medical researcher flips out, get the tranquilizer gun. If I were in charge of an operation like that, I'd call that one number and have that one guy bring me four of those very special brownies. Two for me and two for the guy flipping out.mistermack wrote:They can't find a cure for cancer either, so that's where YOUR logic falls down!!FBM wrote:No time to read the whole thread, but I'd just like to say that dead people can't sue.

In about an hour everything would be nice and copacetic all around.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."
