Some parts of the spectrum are licensed, and some sold outright. Cell phone, satellite and other broadband frequencies are not licensed, they are the property of the companies who bought them at auction. Other parts of the spectrum, like the HAM bands, police frequencies and many others are still licensed however.Gawdzilla wrote:Yep. We have a similar system in my city, and the government has abused it to send out all sorts of alerts to the whole city that concern maybe one street. I predict the same with the national system. There should be a way to opt out.

I will modify my position on this and side with those looking for an opt out. I read an article indicating that the Obama administration would be giving themselves the right to send out "important announcements." That's code for "political sales pitches." I should have known that there is no good idea that the crooks and charlatans in our government won't corrupt for political gain.
