Staking out the streets of south London for weeks at a time he narrowed down his targets by looking for things like old fashioned furniture and well maintained gardens – both indicators of someone who may have retired.
He would also look for a particular style of double glazed window popular in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Manufactured with the beading on the outside, the whole window could be removed easily with basic joinery skills allowing relatively silent access.
To ensure someone was living alone he would also look for tell-tale signs of dual occupancy such as two pairs of shoes in the porch.
In most cases he targeted semi-detached properties and never flats.
If he was uncertain about a particular address he would stake out a property in order to watch the occupant come and go before moving in to attack.
It is also thought he was able to check on addresses when he drove his wife, a committed Jehovah’s Witness around the area where she would preach door to door.
Careful not to leave fingerprints, but unconcerned about DNA, once inside the house he would run through a checklist of actions to reduce his chance of getting caught.
He would remove light bulbs, cut the phone wires and turn the electricity off at the mains.
Moving silently into his victim’s bedroom he would wake them by shining a torch in their eyes so that they were disorientated and blinded.
Usually wearing a balaclava he went to great lengths to hide his identity.
Often after sexually assaulting or raping someone, he would show signs of remorse and would often attempt to converse with his victims.
On some occasions he appeared to leave a series of red-herring clues, telling one elderly lady he had to get back to his home in Brighton, even though he had no obvious connection with the city
Despite his viciousness, some victims said he backed off if they challenged him.
One elderly woman who shouted at him demanding to know what he was doing said he apologised and fled.
Sadly for hundreds of others they were too frightened to resist and were subjected to appalling rapes and sexual assaults.
Because he was a JW this case interested more than most.

It just makes me shake my head when I think of all the decent Jehovah's Witnesses that are allowed by their conscience Governing Body to talk to this man and treat him as a brother, and yet my own family are forbidden to talk to me for the rest of our natural lives because I dispute the fact that Jerusalem was destroyed in 607BCE.
