Earthquake Shakes Parts of Province
April 29, 2009
A sudden awakening for some people on the island, as an earthquake shook parts of the province. Natural Resources Canada says the quake was centred 37 km west southwest of Bay Roberts. It was measured at 3.4 and happened around 11 o'clock last night. Houses shook in Conception Bay North, Whitbourne, Holyrood, Placentia, Burin and the Southern Shore, some so much that pictures fell off walls. Another quake earlier Tuesday originated off the island at a 4.9 magnitude. Officials say it was too far off the coast to be felt significantly. There are no reports of damage yet from the minor tremor, but plenty of people felt the rumble. Michael Keating was watching hockey at home in Dunville last night when he noticed the house shaking. He said it didn't alarm him, but he didn't realize it was an earthquake, until he spoke to friends who also experienced the rumbling. Tom of Roache's Line called VOCM Open Line with Randy Simms and says he felt the tremor and heard a roar, but thought it could be a thunderstorm. RCMP Corporal Brent Hillier lives in Bay Roberts. He says he was watching a movie when he heard the rumble and felt the shake. He describes it as like a large truck driving down the road. Marilyn Molloy of Peter's River said she heard the rumbling. She said at first, she thought it might be thunder and didn't realize what it was until she heard the news this morning.
Natural Resources Canada says earthquakes are relatively rare in this region, and can be very different than ones that occur on the west coast of the continent. Seismologist with Natural Resources Canada, Stephen Halchuk says because they're deeper in the ground, it's harder to find the cause. Halchuk says last night's earthquake near Whitbourne was the second earthquake in the region yesterday, the other occurred well out to sea, and wasn't felt onshore, but the two events are not connected. Halchuk says they did receive a call from a man in Torbay who told them he felt an explosion from nearby road construction, but was disappointed that he didn't feel the earthquake.

It's kinda hard to tell when one that small hits. I guess they just thought it was a truck going past. (They have roads in Newfoundland, don't they?mrenutt4 wrote:Guess they don't scare easily ,or were all to pissed to care ?

But they never use them because everyone is always out in their fishing boats.

And then they get lost in the fog... all that remains is the dark silhouettes of 'tuckamore' lining the edges of the bogs...Mysturji wrote:Of course they do!Gawdzilla wrote:It's kinda hard to tell when one that small hits. PS: Newf's probably my favourite province in Canada -- nice, humble people and stunning scenery, and quite isolated in space and time. But they're still fair game for poking fun at
