I saw this yesterday. I haven't been keeping up with news from America much lately and I was truly shocked. I don't know if it is as clear cut as Jon Stewart presents it - but it seem ridiculous. And not just what they're doing, but also that most of the media seems to be ignoring it. Very sad to see true heroes, dying of cancer as a result of their efforts, and not getting the help they deserve.

I don't know the full story either, but if it's remotely like presented, holy shit. :nono:

Not voting on it during the xmas holiday because it would slight xtians? Wtf. I bet xtians don't give a rat's ass about it when their houses are broken into during the holidays, or if they need to go to the emergency room from choking on a fucking turkey bone during xmas dinner whilst worshipping a gwod who didn't bother to prevent the incident. :dp:

It seems to me that the workers' existing job related health coverage should cover them. Where is the city in this? Did New York fire these guys and drop their health care or something?

Clearly the attempt to pay for 911 first responders' medical costs is a liberal plot to undermine our freedom. Duh. Death panels. No birth certificate. Drill, baby, drill.

This was talked about a little on one of the Daily Show clips: http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-d ... filibuster

Also, a lot of people involved weren't there in any official capacity - they were emergency workers from outside NY who went there on their own dime to volunteer.

Something like that. I recall from the clip that some of them were taken off duty when they got sick, so their employers say that they can only get what workman's comp will pay, which isn't everything, it seems. In other cases, their employers' insurance companies are fighting having the illnesses classified as work-related. Something like that, anyway. There's a second part to that clip. It's an interview with some of the first-responders. They give more details.
