Report: 'Draw Muhammad' cartoonist changes name, goes into hiding at FBI's insistence

Seattle Weekly announced today that it will no longer run Molly Norris's artwork. The newspaper is also reporting that legally, there is no more "Molly Norris."

Norris -- the Seattle-based illustrator whose cartoon sparked "Everybody Draw Muhammad Day!" earlier this year and a subsequent fatwa against her -- has gone into hiding and changed her name at the guidance of the FBI, reports the Seattle Weekly, which says:

"The gifted artist is alive and well, thankfully. But on the insistence of top security specialists at the FBI, she is, as they put it, 'going ghost': moving, changing her name, and essentially wiping away her identity. She will no longer be publishing cartoons in our paper or in City Arts magazine, where she has been a regular contributor."

Seattle Weekly also says that the artist likens the situation to cancer -- the threat could be benign, it could be more serious and sudden.

Comic Riffs last communicated with Norris in July. Attempts to contact her Wednesday were unsuccessful.

Several months ago, FBI officials alerted Norris to what they were treating as a "very serious threat," according to a report. At that time, Yemeni-American cleric Anwar al-Awlaki said that Norris was a "prime target" for execution and that her "proper abode is hellfire."

Free people's everywhere must stand against Islam.

We haven't been at war with Islam, but perhaps we should be.

People wring their hands about the rights of Muslims to create icons of discrimination and hate, and to practice their oppressive ideologies free from the insult of Koran burning and desecration, but very little worry is extended by those same folks when a comic artist is driven into hiding by people claiming to speak for that oppressive ideology known as Islam.

We need to keep reminding everyone that Muslims are not an "oppressed minority" just looking to practice their religion in peace. They are oppressors and bigots and discriminatory racists.

I am far more "offended" by Mollie Norris having to put herself in the witness protection program than anyone burning a Koran.

Where is the "moderate" Muslim outrage that Norris is driven underground in the name of Islam?

I swear this is like dealing with an abusive spouse/relative/or whoever. You find yourself doing everything to NOT make them angry. But you know what, they don't need a reason. They abuse regardless and by not fighting back, you give them even more power to do so. I see Islam the same way.

Well, what if we do speak out and retaliate? Are we always going to play the victim? And let Islam dictate how we're going to think, act and live? Well, eventually yes. Because they'll show anger and threats every time we object. THEY will scream discrimination and hate about us, but in reality it is them. They will twist everything and make it look like they're right and we're wrong.

There are moderate voices out there and I have no idea if they are getting short shrift by the media or if there just aren't than many of them.

Still, there aren't so many that the mullahs aren't afraid to put a fatwa on a cartoonist.

Did any of those in the media or government who supported the wars in Iraq or Afghanistan have to go into hiding? Does Colin Powell have a bounty on his head? I don't much care for the Neocons, but the Muslim leaders are making them look pretty damn reasonable.

There aren't many of them. The mainstream media would LOVE to have them on. It's the mainstream media that soft pedals the Islamic threats, and sells the never ending mantras: "Islam is a peaceful religion" "It's not all Muslims" "Most Muslims are nice" "Islam is one of the great religions" "These extremists don't represent Islam" - they keep saying that even when they don't have anyone to put on their broadcasts to actually back it up.

And, those "moderate" Muslims that they do put on their always double-talk. It's always an "we're not in favor of violence, buuuuuttt...." type comment, where they engage in apologetics.

So - who are these moderates of which you speak?

I may start going out of my way to insult Musselmen now, whenever I get the chance.

Maybe that's the way to solve this. If everyone - or at least a huge majority of people - just started blaspheming, then they would have to just shut the fuck up. We hear over and over again that we can't fight 1.2 billion Muslims - well - you know what - they can't fight 5.5 billion non-Muslims. And, I'm fairly sure that most non-Muslims, except the most lily-livered multiculturalist douche, is getting flat out sick of the Musselman bullshit.
