I've been watching the field of post-election Labour for a while now, and I think it suffices to say: the party is dead. If we thought the party had gone to pot after the Iraq affair, I think it's demonstrably the case that the relationship between the public and the Labour party only began to enter turbulence when Gordon became the premier. The country has quintessentially been buggered by a combination of political incompetence and enthusiastic spending, and now we're having to pay the cost for that through the Conservatives. We no longer have Tony Blair, and we certainly do not have Gordon Brown. The Labour party is without face. It has no official representative, it's been reduced to a rambling mob of disgraced backbenchers who opportunistically take a wild stab at the coalition whenever the chance arises. It's absolutely pathetic, and yet we accredit these people with the title of 'shadow government'?

Labour has been dead ever since they became 'New Labour'. Throughout their history they have been becoming less a party for workers, and more a party for themselves, - but once Blair got in they were just taking as much as they could, while trying not to let the public notice. They must have know it couldn't last, but it didn't stop them.
