Vandalism for a new millenium

Post by maiforpeace » Fri Apr 10, 2009 8:03 pm

Yesterday some fiber optics cables were dug up and severed, cutting off two and a half counties from internet and phone access. Even 911 calls were limited. The reward for these vandals has increased from 100K to half a million now.
We were crippled. No computer access, ATM's and credit cards down, business literally came to a standstill.

:nono:

I hope that will mean employment of (tighter?) security for communication cables now?

Sounds like "Single point of failure" to me - not the best way of organising such an essential infrastructure! Where were their back-up cables FFS?

That's the problem with optical fibres - you don't get a massive electric shock when you cut them... :nono:

Oooh, maybe that's why the communication was so noisy and broken when my parents called from Half Moon Bay today... things are still in a bit of chaos?

Seems like HMB lucked out though (even though San Carlos is really fucking close -- btw, used to live there, many many years ago!) -- still got email from people there.

Honestly though... must be some corporate sabotage -- what kind of prankster in their right mind would bother with accessing the cables and cutting them? Seems a bit too much work for something so stupid and unimpressive.
