Nonsense. How are you quantifying harm and good here? Clearly, in this instance, the girl was foolish, and it's a terrible tragedy whenever something like this happens. But it's no different to what can happen if you're answering an ad in a paper and go to meet people alone, or you meet someone in a cafe and decide to let them give you a lift.born-again-atheist wrote:http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/man-charged-w ... -v4w6.html

The 'Myspace era' as you put it, includes all websites and forums including this one. We have freer communication than ever before, and we do have to be careful with it, but to claim it's doing more harm than good is ridiculous. The sum of human knowledge is at the fingertips of millions of people, and that has already led to some of the most creative progress in science, technology and education, ever.
Obviously people should still be made aware that going places with strangers is a risk. But that's no more true today than it was a hundred years ago. There are still places in the world today where people in slums get offered work and end up in slavery. You can't blame that on facebook.

Erm, no. Unless you have some evidence other than facebook was "involved". Because you know, people were murdered before the internet.born-again-atheist wrote:http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/man-charged-w ... -v4w6.html

In fact we wouldn't even know it had happened if It weren't for the internet (I don't get the Sydney newspapers delivered )

Forums such as this one spawned from the old usenet. It was the myspace era which saw thousands, millions of people think it a good idea to post their personal information all over the place. There have already been concerns raised about the number of sexual predators on websites such as myspace, and now we're seeing just one other facet of it.
This is not comparable to the cafe, or the newspaper advert. Here you're exposed to millions of individuals, with your picture, address, email and telephone number all up for grabs. Neither of those are available to such a wide audience anywhere else in the world. They are not only traded and sold by all those cleverly disguised third party programs like "quizzes", but can be viewed by anyone anywhere at anytime. No amount of privacy you stack on to it is ever enough. If somebody wants that information, they will get it. Most people don't realise this, nor will they ever.
Also, The sum of human knowledge does not gain anything from status updates, shitty photos and flash games.
I didn't blame the internet, I blamed myspace and its ilk. You have thousands of uneducated, naive teenagers thinking that because someone is nice on the internet they're fine in real life.

In case you didn't read the Article, it's about facebook and the internet, not slums in third world countries. I know for some people it's hard to differentiate between the two, but there is a slight variation between them.here are still places in the world today where people in slums get offered work and end up in slavery. No, really?Because you know, people were murdered before the internet.

What exactly do you think someone is going to do with all theses people's contact details? Message them to death? It's only a problem if you start trusting people you've never met.born-again-atheist wrote:Forums such as this one spawned from the old usenet. The majority of this forum is inane comments - do you really not see how that benefits the community and allows greater communication?born-again-atheist wrote:Also, The sum of human knowledge does not gain anything from status updates, shitty photos and flash games.
Not it's not. The spin is about facebook - but what the story is really about, is the risk of going places with strangers. And now, thanks to the internet, thousands more naive teenagers reading this article, are not so naive any more.born-again-atheist wrote:In case you didn't read the Article, it's about facebook and the internet, not slums in third world countries.
