Children's Day

Post by FBM » Wed May 05, 2010 2:45 am

Korea celebrates Children's day today, May 5, instead of on the international date for it, June 1. Since I haven't begat any of the little people, I thought I'd try to help some of the ones already begat by others. A short Intenet search landed me on this website: http://www.somaly.org/.

Just for today, I'm going to stop being such a self-absorbed twit and do something for someone else. :shiver:

I'm wild just like a rock, a stone, a tree
And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away
And then one day it turns to clay
It blows away, it finds a ray, it finds its way
And there it lays until the rain and sun
Then I breathe, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I grow, just like a baby breastfeeding
And it's beautiful, that's life

Thank you... :shiver:

I read on that site that they're starting up an English program for the survivors. I can think of worse ways to spend a vacation than volunteering to teach there. :eddy:

Let us think the unthinkable, let us do the undoable, let us prepare to grapple with the ineffable itself, and see if we may not eff it after all.

I would be adverse to giving money to one of her charities unless it was stated clearly that it wasn't veiled missionary work

Due to some minor legal actions the Catholic Church will not be saying a mass for Children's Day this year.

I read through the site very thoroughly and also read several news stories about Somaly Mam. Never saw anything with even a hint of a religious tone. Given that Cambodia is overwhelmingly Buddhist and Somaly Mam is Cambodian, I don't think there's much risk. If she were, I'd just find another channel for my help.
