I've noticed in the US military there's a huge thing about the Marine Corps. I'm a bit confused why the stress on NAVAL soldiers as opposed to field/air soldiers. It seems as though they're the most embellished, elite soldiers, and so many recruiting TV ads are advertising just the Marine Corp. I still don't get why the focus on that Corps and seafare in America... for instance, what about the United States Army Air Forces? That doesn't get half the publicity.

Those commercials reflect the attitudes of the services and the people involved with them. The other services run commercials which talk about career advancement and occasionally mention service to country (the Navy's last slogan was "Accelerate Your Life", recently replaced by "A Global Force For Good"), whereas the Marines emphasize a warrior ethos from the start. And they mean it.

The navy and the marines dont really like each other from what I can remember.

Just kidding. I have the utmost respect for the Marine Corps. And for most of the Marines I've met, starting with my drill instructor at Navy Officer Candidate School. The class t-shirt I wore at the end of that course proudly said "Navy owned, Marine Corps trained". The "they don't like each other" stuff is normal interservice rivalry. I genuinely disrespect the Air Force just a little bit, but not the Marines. I've also deployed with over a thousand Marines when I was with the USS Iwo Jima. I came to like them very much.
Even if those jarheaded ground-pounders are dumb as bricks.

In terms of man for man infantry skills, and personal bravery there are few to compare to, because in most nations the equivalent level of competence is usually much smaller. For example the Para Regiments or the Royal Marines and Royal Marine Commandos who are their direct comparison. They are a LOT of very well trained men, with a shit load of firepower. However, notice I said infantry skills. For Spec ops, the SAS/SBS still kick arse harder than Delta, any day!

Comparing the Army's Delta, the Navy's DEVGRU and British SAS is a three-way game of apples and oranges. They're all at the very top of their game, just with slightly different skill sets.
Besides, US Navy DEVRGU is the toughest. 'Cause I said they are. So there.
The Marine Corps doesn't really have special warfare troops on the same level. Recon Marines are in the same ballpark I suppose. But the whole attitude of the Corps is that they're a step above the regular Army in terms of fighting competence. And they are.
And the Navy owns them. :twisted:
