Would the Dawk be knighted if he wasn't an atheist?
We Brits have this rather silly New Years honours system, where the great and the good get knighthoods, OBEs and MBEs (medals and recognition) for their achievements. Patrick Stewart got a knighthood this year ffs. Usually a few scientists do too.
The Queen awards these honours technically, though a panel works up the list. The Queen is the head of the Church of England.
Now this stuff is nonsense but it does carry social weight - so do you think our Dicky would get an honour if he was not so in your face as an atheist?

There's a raging debate on JREF about whether or not he's too rude. I asked for instances for when he was being rude. Nobody came up with one. That's not very "in your face", IMNSHO. He's blatantly atheist, but not rude about it.Rum wrote:We Brits have this rather silly New Years honours system, where the great and the good get knighthoods, OBEs and MBEs (medals and recognition) for their achievements. I agree - he isn't rude. But he is forthright in a way us British tend to be brought up to avoid. Disagreement is generally couched in terms of 'well I respect what you say but my angle on it is...', etc...for better or worse. He certainly doesn't beat about the bush!Gawdzilla wrote:There's a raging debate on JREF about whether or not he's too rude. I asked for instances for when he was being rude. Nobody came up with one. I see what you mean there. The notorious British understatement.Rum wrote:I agree - he isn't rude. But he is forthright in a way us British tend to be brought up to avoid. His "rudeness" comes from the fundies, of course, and they have no problem making baseless assertions.

Darwin was never knighted, so Dawkins is in very good company.

I still LOL when I see the comment about "Why is Darwin buried in Westminster? He's no king!"klr wrote:Darwin was never knighted, so Dawkins is in very good company.

Who works up the list? Perhaps someone should start with getting Dawkins on the list?
And if rudeness is a criteria for not being knighted, then why is Elton John knighted?

I agree with these sentiments. He is forthright, but not "rude", and I suspect he will never get a knighthood given the monarch's connection with the established church...Rum wrote:I agree - he isn't rude. Good point!maiforpeace wrote:Who works up the list? Perhaps someone should start with getting Dawkins on the list?

These days, being blatantly athiest is a much greater sin than being blatantly gay...

(not that either of them are sins, of course...
