More Yob Britain..fighting back
From the BBC at:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manc ... 215720.stm
Raids arrests total exceeds 670
Police have arrested more than 670 people in the operation
Police have made almost 150 further arrests during a series of raids across Greater Manchester in a major crackdown on alcohol-fuelled crime.
About 3,000 officers took part in Operation Admiral on Friday morning when 447 people were arrested. An extra 143 people have since been held.
A total of 672 arrests have been made in the operation, with 82 people arrested before Friday.
Two nine-inch knives were among the items seized.
A man was arrested on suspicion of carrying the knives in Castleton at 0325 BST.
The force described the raids as the "biggest single-day operations GMP has ever run".
A number of pubs were shut down, including one in south Manchester where officers discovered a cannabis farm behind a false wall.

Apparently we have the same problem here. Well in Melbourne at any rate.
MtD
(linkage}VIOLENT thugs are costing Melburnians almost $60 million a year.
The violence damaging the city's reputation and causing a loss of business.
Business leaders warn that Melbourne's reputation is suffering badly as political and police bosses struggle to deal with the fallout from alcohol-fuelled weekends of carnage.

A nine inch knife not much use against a lance, what?

Re: More Yob Britain..fighting back
A bit quaint at first sight perhaps but in the absence of legalised guns with which to kill each other in thousands as in the USA our yoof have turned (though in a slightly smaller way) to knifing each other. In 2007-8 there were 277 deaths from stabbings in England & Wales alone. This represents an average death toll as a direct result of stabbings of over 5 for every week of the year..and we are a small country don't forget. Re: More Yob Britain..fighting back
It's not the legalisation of firearms which is the problem, it is the availability and accessability coupled with incredibly poor education and a population with an average IQ of a Walnut.

Re: More Yob Britain..fighting back
Well let's not go there - I have seen forums on the net melt down of firearms control discussions. It is clear however that kids in the UK have turned to using knives quite commonly as 'protection'. That is the most common reason given. Of course one person's 'protection' is another's stabbing.born-again-atheist wrote:It's not the legalisation of firearms which is the problem, it is the availability and accessability coupled with incredibly poor education and a population with an average IQ of a Walnut.
Re: More Yob Britain..fighting back
It's because knives are easy to conceal, and the inaccessibility to firearms (also comparitively easy to conceal from the naked eye) means the people with the intelligence comparative to that of the gas released by a corpse need to find another 'respectably' fatal weapon that requires minimal experience to kill someone.

Re: More Yob Britain..fighting back
I am sure you have a point, but the issue of most concern to me is why young people seem to have ratcheted up their anxiety to increasingly resort to carrying weapons and what lays behind the apparent increase in violence of this type.born-again-atheist wrote:It's because knives are easy to conceal, and the inaccessibility to firearms (also comparitively easy to conceal from the naked eye) means the people with the intelligence comparative to that of the gas released by a corpse need to find another 'respectably' fatal weapon that requires minimal experience to kill someone.

Could be they feel insecure because of fearmongering, and because most probably the increase in crime is a self-perpetuating cycle.
Could be youth gangs might be the only way to survive in environments or the only social interaction available, for example, and carrying weapons is the MO of any wannabe tough-guy gang. With wannabe gangs you get rivalries.
Could be the areas have high incidents of crime, so youths who aren't exactly known for their rationality think it's their duty to stand up to them, or have a way of protecting themselves rather than give up their money (or most likely their phones or ipods these days).
Could just be that they're treated like shit by the system, considered no-hopers, so they turn to the only place that doesn't care who you are, which is crime.
But probably you should ask them yourself.

What 'system' are you talking about? That attitude is soooo 'old'.born-again-atheist wrote:Could be they feel insecure because of fearmongering, and because most probably the increase in crime is a self-perpetuating cycle.

Re: More Yob Britain..fighting back
Interesting perspectives. I live in a very strong hunting area. Seeing people carrying around Bowie knives and the like is routine. In fact, there are a pretty decent number who conceal or open carry firearms in these parts. Then again, I'd say a significant portion of us were schooled in using knives and firearms from an early age, mostly through camping and hunting (I don't hunt though).
I personally see little need for firearms. However, they are legal here. So I have a wakizashi in my vehicle, and a concealed carry permit with which I carry a handgun. I wish we didn't have guns, but I'm not going to get caught unprepared. I went to high school with people that have been gunned down (obviously not the apex of humanity), but one cannot be too careful when anyone could be packing.
