In Haifa, Israel's third-largest city, 75,000 people -- 25% of the population – have been evacuated from their homes. Blazes are endangering communities in dozens of locations across Israel, and Israel Electric has declared a state of emergency.
The source of these fires? In many of the cases, most likely terror. Though perhaps weather-related, no such phenomenon was reported in the West Bank, Gaza and Jordan, where conditions are similar.
Israel's Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan said that camera footage shows arsonists in action. One senior Haifa firefighter said that terrorists "tried to set fire to the department's station in Haifa deliberately – to cause the Haifa fire department to be paralyzed."
Several terror suspects are in custody.
