Churchill was Right

Post by Svartalf » Tue Nov 22, 2016 9:27 pm

The best argument against democracy is a 5 minute talk with the average voter.

So there's this bloke, former prime minister to Nicholas Sarkoshyt, and hence largely responsible for the economic failure of that term, who promises to go back on the law allowing gay marriage, having said multiple times that 'a family is one man and one woman', and who intends to suppress the Big Fortune tax by raising VAT and making the poor pay... and he just won the first round of the primary by gaining 44% of votes, that is 16% more than the runner up (an other former PM of catastrophic memory)... So yesterday, I was in my usual bar, having morning coffee and assimilating the news when this guy who was next to me starts ranting that this is an upright bloke and that it's a good thing he won.

I rest Sir Winston's case.

It's not Churchill's case because he never said that. He did say
No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.

He said that too, but I hear he also said what I quoted... though I'm not sure how to verify/falsify it

The second quote is reported in the records of proceedings in the House of commons. It is part of a speech Churchill made as leader of the opposition on November 11, 1947. As for the first quote in conjunction to Churchill, let me know if you can find an authoritative source of him saying that. Richard Langworth, author of Churchill by Himself: The Definitive Collection of Quotations writes that it is not a Churchill quote, but does not go into detail as to why it isn't. The earliest conjunction of the quote and Churchill that I know of is a usenet post dated 30. 11.1999.

Interestingly enough, those sources I find that say it's not churchill do not give any attribution, but WinstonChurchill.org is indeed of a mind with you, though the quote does match the kind of wit sir Winston often exhibited.

To me it's a matter of finding a credible source. Else, it's just a witty quip to which its creator has invented authorship of a well respected person in order to add gravitas. Americans love to draft Twain for that person and everyone's absolute favourite is Einstein, but really anyone famous will do. For the purpose of this particular exchange the first five words of a quote by honest Abe comes to mind:
